Penguin anthropomorphism

Penguins once again become a touching metaphor for humans; this time homosexuals who want to raise children. A couple of supposedly gay penguins in Madrid are yearning to be parents. I’m not sure how anyone knows that they are in the throes of unfulfilled parental yearning other than the fact that they have built a nest. I was under the impression that building nests is just something birds do. Still, someone is going to put an egg in it.

That proves that it was OK to give Elton and David an egg… err, a baby.

From here:

Two gay Gentoo Penguins, that have for six years yearned to be parents, have been given their own egg to rear in Madrid, reports say.

The two male penguins, Inca and Rayas, met at Madrid’s Faunia Park six years ago, and have been inseparable since then. However, they have been building a nest every year in the hope of being able to nurture a young penguin, to no avail.

The Times reports today that zoo-keepers will place an egg in their nest, in order for them to become parents.

Gay penguins no longer gay

From here:

It appears the Toronto Zoo’s famously same-sex pair of penguins have not only gone their separate ways, but are even pursuing female partners.

Buddy and Pedro, a pair of male African penguins whose same-sex bond made worldwide headlines this fall, were separated in November so they could mate with females.

Those who argue that the existence of homosexual behaviour in animals shows that homosexuality is natural in humans, should now be arguing that since homosexual penguins can change their ways, homosexual humans can, too.

I’m not holding my breath, though.

Anglican Church of Canada to marry penguins

After years of searching unsuccessfully for homosexuals willing to tie the knot, the Anglican Church of Canada has, at last, found a community of suitable candidates: gay penguins.Add an Image

Bishop Michael Bird – no relation to a penguin – has stated that the requirements in the Diocese of Niagara for gay penguin matrimonial bliss is that one penguin must be baptised – no problem for the average penguin – and that the gay penguins must be in a long term monogamous relationship. The latter qualification may be relaxed since it poses a bit of a problem for the average gay penguin. And then Bishop Bird will be back to having no-one to marry.

From the BBC:

King penguins do not form long-term homosexual pairs despite same-sex “flirting”, one of the first evidence-based studies has revealed.

Researchers found that over a quarter of the birds in one colony displayed in same-sex pairs, yet only two pairs bonded by learning each other’s calls and both were later seen caring for eggs in heterosexual pairs.

The scientists suggest that these same sex displays could be caused by an excess of males or high levels of testosterone.

I’d like to make sure everyone understands that Bishop Bird has never been accused of having high levels of testosterone.
