The dog days of Ramadan

From here:

Malaysian politicians and religious leaders have attacked the use of Scottie dogs during the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, claiming it was disrespectful to Muslims.

[….]

Mohamad Sabu, the deputy president of the opposition Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party said: “Malaysia and all Islamic countries deserve and [sic] apology from the organiser.

“This is just so disrespectful to Malaysia and Muslims – especially as it happened during Ramadan. Muslims are not allowed to touch dogs, so the organiser should have been more aware and sensitive on this issue.

“It is hoped this incident can teach other Western countries to be more respectful in the future.”

Meanwhile, Muslims in Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and just about any other Islamic state that comes to mind are beheading, raping, torturing, persecuting and generally oppressing anyone who questions Islam. After exhausting the opposition, they turn on each other; all without disrespectfully touching any dogs.

Radical Islam growing in Cardiff

I grew up in Cardiff during an era when the most radical thing that happened in the city was Baptists raising their arms in Chapel. Now, Richard Llewellyn’s valleys, once black with coal dust, are green, covered in grass and being enjoyed by mentally unstable radical Islamists who might have profited by having to earn a living digging up coal by hand from a Welsh mine.

It’s ironic that as the valleys have become greener, the spiritual health of Cardiff has become blacker. Another symptom of our age and the church’s obsession with the material at the expense of the transcendent.

From here:

Cardiff has an ongoing problem with the radicalisation of young Muslims, said an academic who has studied the issue.

Two men from the city have been identified taking part in what appears to be a Jihadist recruiting video, which was posted online last week.

It is thought Reyaad Khan travelled to Syria with friend Nasser Muthana who also appears in the footage.

Khan lived close to the Cardiff men jailed over the London Stock Exchange bombing plot in 2012.

It is believed the two men, both 20, travelled to Syria in November, while Nasser Muthana’s younger brother Aseel, 17, travelled to the country in February.

The men are believed to be among 500 Britons fighting in the conflict in Syria.

I’ll let Richard Llewellyn have the last word:

“It is simple. Men lose their birthrights for a mess of pottage only if they stop using the gifts given them by God for their betterment. By prayer. That is the first and greatest gift. Use the gift of prayer. Ask for strength of mind, and a clear vision. Then sense. Use your sense. Not all of us are born for greatness, but all of us have sense. Make use of it. Think. Think long and well. By prayer and good thought you will conquer all enemies….Behold, the night is coming. Prepare, for the time is at hand.”

Huron College kicks non-Muslim out of Islamic preaching course

Huron College used to be an Anglican theological college. The college’s current Faculty of Theology features Ingrid Mattson as the Chair of Islamic Studies, a discipline that I expect will increasingly find a natural home within Western Anglicanism.

Anglican Primate Fred Hiltz, unable to contain his enthusiasm at the prospect of Islamic Studies being taught in a once Anglican college, endorsed  Mattson’s appointment:

“In establishing the “London and Windsor Community Chair in Islamic Studies”, Huron College is on the cutting edge of interfaith dialogue. With delight I endorse the appointment of Dr. Ingrid Mattson as the first occupant of that chair. She is a highly respected scholar and widely published. She is well known for her leadership in nurturing Muslim-Christian relations. The College and Community will be blessed by Dr. Mattson’s academic qualifications, and her capacity to engage people in dialogue, mutual learning and public witness to the values we hold in common as people of faith.”

Archbishop and Primate
The Anglican Church of Canada

The engaging “people in dialogue, mutual learning and public witness to the values we hold in common as people of faith” hasn’t worked out quite as well as Hiltz hoped: a non-Muslim student has been removed from one of the Islamic courses because he is not a Muslim. Ironically, the course is on Islamic Preaching – to the already converted, it seems.

As Hiltz notes, “Huron College is on the cutting edge of interfaith dialogue.”

From here:

A London, Ont., university is defending its decision to restrict access to a course that teaches Muslims how to proselytize.

The Huron College course — The Muslim Voice: Islamic Preaching, Public Speaking and Worship — was, according to the syllabus, “open to Muslim men and women who offer religious leadership and/or speak publicly about Islam on behalf of their communities.”

The school allowed a non-Muslim to enrol in the course, but then kicked him out because, they said, they didn’t want to open the course to auditors. That student, Moray Watson, is an accountant who says he is an opponent of Islamic extremism and enrolled in the course partly to test the prerequisite in the syllabus.

“I’m not allowed to take the course because I’m not a Muslim”

“[The school] gets $6.5-million [from the government]. Some of it is mine and I’m not allowed to take the course because I’m not a Muslim,” he said.

Islamic advice on how to beat your wife

As  Egyptian cleric Mahmoud Al-Denawy points out: “there are so many…. misconceptions about this.” Here he is, then, to straighten us all out.

The nub of it is: let’s face it, some wives are just plain disobedient. If the husband refusing to sleep with her doesn’t do the trick (this must be an example of Islamic reverse psychology), a spot of beating is in order; try not to break her arms, or teeth, though. And mind out for the face: it belongs to Allah. Besides, someone might notice.

I feel a rare moment of sympathy for atheist bloggers

IslamistsIn Bangladesh, at least, where fanatical Islamists are demanding the arrest of atheist bloggers.

A belief system that can sustain itself only by forcibly silencing all opposition is necessarily false. Islamists are not the first to try this, of course, nor will they be the last; it’s just as well that, in the long run, it never works.

From here:

Tens of thousands of Islamic activists prayed on the streets of the Bangladeshi capital today during a rally calling for the introduction of blaspemy laws and the restoration of a caretaker government.

Members of the Islami Andolan Bangladesh are demanding the arrest of ‘atheist bloggers who insulted Islam’ and to pass laws punishing those who ‘insulted Islam in the parliament’.

They have announced plans to ‘lay siege’ to the office of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on April 25 if their demands are not met.

Koran control

Since a Koran wielded by the wrong person kills, perhaps it is time to start background checks on potential purchasers to ensure none fall into the hands of the mentally unstable. Considering the second paragraph in the quote below, even those that are sold should have a page capacity limit of 10.

Incidentally, when I grew up in the capital of Wales, Cardiff, not even the police carried Korans.

From here:

In the summer of 2010, mourners lined the streets of Wales’s capital city to pay tribute to a seven-year-old boy killed in a house fire. In fact, Yaseen Ali Ege was brutally beaten to death, and then set alight with barbecue fuel. By his mother. For failing to learn the Koran. Over the preceding months, Mom had used a stick, a rolling pin, and a hammer on her son, but, despite these incentives, he had memorized only a couple of pages. And so she killed him, and subsequently declared she felt “100 percent better.”

[….]

Of course not all Muslims brutalize their families — although the ten-year-old daughter of Asia Parveen of Stoke Newington was treated for 56 injuries after being beaten for not reading enough verses of the Koran, and Hesha Yones of west London had her throat cut by her father for being too “Westernized,” and a five-month-old baby in Halmstad, Sweden, was beaten to death with a Koran

Today is World Hijab Day

The idea is that if non-Muslim women wear a hijab for a day, for reasons that are not entirely explained, we will have: “Better awareness, greater understanding and a peaceful world.”

So ladies, don your hijabs and prepare to usher in a halcyon era of calm and tranquillity as male concuspience – the root of all conflict – is quenched by the absence of visible female hair. It is the obvious solution for peace in the Middle East. It should work: looking at this, already I feel waves of libido sapping ataraxia overwhelming me:

Man jailed for leaving a pig’s head outside mosque

From the BBC:

A man has been jailed for three months for dumping a pig’s head outside a mosque in Berkshire.

Rory Rowbottom, from Thatcham, left the animal’s head at the mosque on Pound Street in Newbury on 23 October.

Rowbottom pleaded guilty to one count of racially aggravated harassment and a section 4 public order offence at Reading Magistrates’ Court.it’s every Westerner’s duty to loath his heritage

Ch Insp Lindsey Finch said his actions had left the community “distressed and horrified”.

Meanwhile, those who display Christ in urine and the Virgin Mary in elephant dung are treated with impunity because it’s every Westerner’s duty to loath his heritage; any expression of this loathing is art.

More on MPAC at All Saints Episcopal Church

Rev. Ed Bacon, rector of All Saints Church, the church that has rented its facilities to the Muslim organization, MPAC, is astonished at the negative reaction to his cosying up to Islam, a religion that has as much in common with Christianity as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad does with the Pope.

From here:

A storm cloud has swept over us and is raining down fear and intolerance. On Dec. 15, an American Muslim organization, MPAC, will hold its 12th annual convention at All Saints Church. This has caused some to vilify our community and has brought out the Islamophobes.

At All Saints, we believe that to be religious in the 21st century is to be interreligious. And to be a member of this church is to be a member of the peacemaking community. MPAC is one of our integral partners in interfaith peacemaking.

It is in the DNA of All Saints Church to stand up for justice and provide a voice for the marginalized in society.

The theme of this year’s MPAC convention is “Our Future in the Making.” Salam al-Marayati, executive director of MPAC, said, “at this moment, as we convene at All Saints Church, the future is now, where we all can take hope and encouragement from this opportunity, where we come together to glimpse what is possible and can visualize what a future of peace could look like.”

It is time to end the toxic narrative that too many of our religions have promulgated that says that in order to become a part of my religion you have to hate somebody else in another religion. We can change that dynamic. We can make the decision to stop sleepwalking, to wake up to reality, to embrace the inter-connectedness that binds us all, no matter what religion or race.

Salam al-Marayati, executive director of MPAC, is renowned for his interfaith peacemaking by endearing himself to Jews when he suggested, a few hours after the 9/11 attacks, that Israel might be to blame:

”If we’re going to look at suspects, we should look to the groups that benefit the most from these kinds of incidents, and I think we should put the state of Israel on the suspect list because I think this diverts attention from what’s happening in the Palestinian territories so that they can go on with their aggression and occupation and apartheid policies.”

Also, while not busy “embrac[ing] the inter-connectedness that binds us all” he spends his time defending Hezbollah and Hamas and complaining that people will keep reminding him about the Holocaust:

For this administration to appoint to an august human rights organization Salam Al-Marayati, who has openly supported Hizbollah, claimed that the FBI has illegally incited Muslims on terrorism charges because of FBI sanctioned policies of “racial profiling,” has defended as innocent the most notorious members of Hamas who were found guilty of laundering millions of dollars to a terrorist group, and someone who has complained of ‘having the Holocaust shoved down [his] throat,’ is an outrage.

I do hope that my next comment won’t be interpreted as Islamophobic or part of a toxic narrative, let alone a reluctance to come together to glimpse what is possible, but Salam, old boy, are you sure you want to rent a building from a person whose surname is Bacon?
