Climategate 2

The global warming alarmists have been telling porkies again, this time, Professor Richard Muller who portentously announced the demise of global warming scepticism in the Wall Street Journal recently.

Following this revelation, Prof Judith Curry from the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology accused Muller of hiding the fact that there has been no warming for the last 13 years.

Ironically, the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project, of which Muller is founder and chairman, has A transparent approach based on data analysis”, emblazoned on its web page.

It was hailed as the scientific study that ended the global warming debate once and for all – the research that, in the words of its director, ‘proved you should not be a sceptic, at least not any longer’.

Professor Richard Muller, of Berkeley University in California, and his colleagues from the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperatures project team (BEST) claimed to have shown that the planet has warmed by almost a degree centigrade since 1950 and is warming continually.

[…..]

a leading member of Prof Muller’s team has accused him of trying to mislead the public by hiding the fact that BEST’s research shows global warming has stopped.

Prof Judith Curry, who chairs the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at America’s prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology, said that Prof Muller’s claim that he has proven global warming sceptics wrong was also a ‘huge mistake’, with no scientific basis.

Prof Curry is a distinguished climate researcher with more than 30 years experience and the second named co-author of the BEST project’s four research papers.

[…..]

As for the graph disseminated to the media, she said: ‘This is “hide the decline” stuff. Our data show the pause, just as the other sets of data do. Muller is hiding the decline.

The horse manure problem

The nineteenth century horse manure problem:

Nineteenth-century cities depended on thousands of horses for their daily functioning. All transport, whether of goods or people, was drawn by horses. London in 1900 had 11,000 cabs, all horse-powered. There were also several thousand buses, each of which required 12 horses per day, a total of more than 50,000 horses. In addition, there were countless carts, drays, and wains, all working constantly to deliver the goods needed by the rapidly growing population of what was then the largest city in the world. Similar figures could be produced for any great city of the time.*

The problem of course was that all these horses produced huge amounts of manure. A horse will on average produce between 15 and 35 pounds of manure per day. Consequently, the streets of nineteenth-century cities were covered by horse manure. This in turn attracted huge numbers of flies, and the dried and ground-up manure was blown everywhere. In New York in 1900, the population of 100,000 horses produced 2.5 million pounds of horse manure per day, which all had to be swept up and disposed of. (See Edwin G. Burrows and Mike Wallace, Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898 [New York: Oxford University Press, 1999]).

In 1898 the first international urban-planning conference convened in New York. It was abandoned after three days, instead of the scheduled ten, because none of the delegates could see any solution to the growing crisis posed by urban horses and their output.

The problem did indeed seem intractable. The larger and richer that cities became, the more horses they needed to function. The more horses, the more manure. Writing in the Times of London in 1894, one writer estimated that in 50 years every street in London would be buried under nine feet of manure. Moreover, all these horses had to be stabled, which used up ever-larger areas of increasingly valuable land. And as the number of horses grew, ever-more land had to be devoted to producing hay to feed them (rather than producing food for people), and this had to be brought into cities and distributed—by horse-drawn vehicles. It seemed that urban civilization was doomed.

Even though today a more colloquial rendering  is common, the original horse manure problem is still with us in the guise of global warming. Since it locates the dwelling place of sin in the inanimate rather than where it belongs in the human heart, it appeals especially to Anglican bishops. Melbourne’s Archbishop Freier recently intoned:

If the [climate] scientists are even partly right, “our children’s children will have to endure a harmful legacy,” Dr Philip Freier, Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne warned last night, in his opening address to the 50th Synod of the Diocese of Melbourne.

The Harold Campings of climate catastrophe had recent cause for celebration (they secretly welcome the doom implicit in global warming) here where Richard Muller pronounced that “Global warming is real”. However, he did rather let the side down in the last two sentences of his article – an unfortunate admission since it was supposedly the point of the study – a blunder noticed here and here:

How much of the warming is due to humans and what will be the likely effects? We made no independent assessment of that.

It seems anthropogenic global warming may well be nothing but a pile of horse manure after all.

The global warming scam becomes more sinister

I take for granted that the unholy conglomerate of Al Gore hawking global warming Ponzi schemes from the comfort of his private jets, climate change action kit empowered mainline churches, Kyoto protocol peddlers, along with other assorted gullible suckers and hangers-on are all irredeemably riddled with corruption; but I hadn’t realised things had become this bad:

Armed troops acting on behalf of a British carbon trading company backed by the World Bank burned houses to the ground and killed children to evict Ugandans from their homes in the name of seizing land to protect against “global warming,” a shocking illustration of how the climate change con is a barbarian form of neo-colonialism.

The evictions were ordered by New Forests Company, an outfit that seizes land in Africa to grow trees then sells the “carbon credits” on to transnational corporations. The company is backed by the World Bank and HSBC. Its Board of Directors includes HSBC Managing Director Sajjad Sabur, as well as other former Goldman Sachs investment bankers.

The company claims residents of Kicucula left in a “peaceful” and “voluntary” manner, and yet the people tell a story of terror and bloodshed.

Villagers told of how armed “security forces” stormed their village and torched houses, burning an eight-year-child to death as they threatened to murder anyone who resisted while beating others.

The seizure of arable land in the name of “global warming” is set to become big business, which is why the United Nations recently announced it is preparing to roll out an army of green helmeted “climate peacekeepers” to intervene in poorer countries to protect “shrinking resources”.

[….]

Transnational corporations, in league with western governments and offshore banks, have seized upon the climate change scam to carry out genocidal policies and land grabs in the pursuit of selling carbon credits to other transnational corporations who then merely pass on the cost to the consumer.

The NYT also reports on this here.

The unsettling of global warming science

From here:

Last week, 63 scientists from CERN, the unimpeachable European Organization for Nuclear Research, published a paper in the journal Nature that would seem to prove that the sun and not humans is the main “driver” of climate on Earth.

In short, cloud cover is the most important determinant of global warming or cooling. Tiny changes in the percentage of Earth shielded by clouds (or not) can cause a variation in global temperatures of several degrees, down or up. Cosmic rays are the main cause of cloud formation – the more rays from outer space reaching our planet’s atmosphere, the more clouds form and the cooler the surface becomes.

[…..]

the CERN team found human CO2 emissions have little or no impact, or at the very least their impact has been greatly overestimated in the computer models global-warming alarmists rely on to show dangerous future climate.

Meanwhile, Al Gore likened those who question the veracity of the anthropogenic global warming theory – and, thus, the 63 CERN scientists – to racists.

And the Anglican Communion Environmental Network, declared that “Anglicans must act” because “Creation is in crisis”. Not, of course, a crisis of too little cloud cover – after all, these Anglicans have found plenty of cloud in which to thrust their heads – but of too much capitalism, the only sin left for a religion that has replaced the dogma of transcendence with that of Marx.

Attack of the eco-aliens

The latest hazard being proposed by global warming neurotics signifies a distinct shift to the outer limits of the lunatic fringe where, along with their compatriots from Anglican and United churches, they can fret about the imminent danger of being attacked by anti-global warming aliens.

The only thing missing from these speculations is what kind of low-carbon hybrid space ships they will arrive in.

From here:

We’ve all heard of the ravaged rain forests and the plight of the polar bear. But as far as reasons for saving the planet go, the one offered by scientists Thursday is truly out of this world.

A team of American researchers have produced a range of scenarios in which aliens could attack the earth, and curiously, one revolves around climate change.

They speculate that extraterrestrial environmentalists could be so appalled by our planet-polluting ways that they view us as a threat to the intergalactic ecosystem and decide to destroy us.

The true cause of global warming finally revealed

It was only a matter of time before someone pinned the blame on flatulating camels; and Australia wants to do something about it:

The world’s association of camel scientists fought back angrily on Monday over Australian plans to kill wild dromedaries on the grounds that their flatulence adds to global warming.

The idea is “false and stupid… a scientific aberration”, the International Society of Camelid Research and Development (ISOCARD) charged, saying camels were being made culprits for a man-made problem.

“We believe that the good-hearted people and innovating nation of Australia can come up with better and smarter solutions than eradicating camels in inhumane ways,” it said.

The smarter solution is obvious: harness the inflammable gaseous emissions in camel wind farms. You could include a few Anglican bishops, too.

Global warming and politics

While the truth of anthropogenic global warming obviously doesn’t rest on who believes or doesn’t believe in it, it is noteworthy that belief in global warming tends to align with political allegiance: Liberals are much more likely to be true believers than Conservatives. Even more significant is the fact that very few Liberal supporters have even read articles that question the accuracy of anthropogenic global warming theories.

All of which – regardless of whether the earth is warming or not – confirms that Liberals are…. gullible.

From here:

According to a draft report from the Brookings Institute that compares attitudes to global warming in the U.S. and Canada, an astounding 91% of Canadians who identify themselves as Liberals, and 90% who identify with the Bloc, answer “Yes” when asked: “From what you’ve read and heard, is there solid evidence that the average temperature on Earth has been getting warmer over the past four decades.” Only 6% of Liberals and 9% of Bloc supporters have read and heard that the Earth has not been getting warmer, and just 3% and 1%, respectively, aren’t sure.

Canada’s Conservatives have been exposed to different views: 64% have heard that Earth has been getting warmer and 28% that Earth has not. 8% of Conservatives aren’t sure.
