University of Toronto distances itself from courage

From here:

The University of Toronto has distanced itself from a controversial program dubbed “Courage” that is described as an anonymous support group to help young adults struggling to resist homosexual urges recently launched at the Catholic parish based on the school’s main campus.

[…..]

“The Newman Courage group is a spiritual support group for young adults who experience same-sex attractions and who desire to live chastely, in accordance with Catholic teaching,” reads the centre’s website. A pamphlet lists the five goals of Courage, including fostering a spirit of fellowship to help “ensure that no one will have to face problems of homosexuality alone.”

Note that the support group is not compelling anyone to do anything. In contrast, in a spirit of openness, tolerance and free enquiry, Toronto’s bastion of higher learning has concluded, for no particular reason other than liberal bigotry, that a homosexual who does not wish to act on his urges should be denied any assistance in living in his freely chosen manner: compulsory homosexuality.

  1. This type of thinking – that you don’t have to follow through on your impulses and attractions – is now very counter-cultural, which is what Christianity has now become in society. The Bible’s teachings are put through the meat grinder of public opinion and in the end, anyone who believes differently gets trashed as well.

It is disappointing to see this group and its goal get slammed, but it is encouraging to see such a group in action.

  2. Proving once again that publicly funded universities in Canada – rather than promoting the free expression of ideas and tolerance – are bastions of a particular social conformity and the limiting of free thinking. They are for choice only so long it is their choice that you choose.

    • Hello Eph,

You comments remind me of a course that I took in University to fulfill my Gen Ed requirement. Concepts of Male and Female in Western Civilization. Taught by a femi-nazi with a homosexual for a TA the course basically got down to this. Women have been used and abused by men since the beginning of time, and now is the time for payback. I quickly learned that the only way I was going to pass this course was to write what they Prof wanted to read, no matter how much I disagreed with it. So that’s what I did, and passed.

    • The last time I was in one – and that was quite a while ago — you were allowed to think only within narrow parameters. It has gone badly downhill even from there.

  3. I give up. Whatever the hell is happening here in these comments, it’s not the Gospel. And if it is, I don’t want the Gospel.

    • No doubt there’s a more charitable, respectful and Christian-seeming way people can find to disagree. Is that your objection, Vincent? Well, I am trying. We all have to work to get over ourselves. From the article on the Pope’s speech, “Church teaching holds that homosexual acts are ‘intrinsically disordered,’ though it stresses that gays should be treated with compassion and dignity.” Again and again and again … loathe the sin, love the sinner.

      • But, while we’re here, Vincent. In an article on the State of Kansas’ bringing suit against a sperm donor for child support — after the lesbian couple to whom he made his donation separated and went on welfare benefit —, I read in the comments lots of outcry on behalf of his rights. Along the lines of ‘what kind of ***h*** goes after a sperm donor for child support.” Likewise lots of strident advocacy for the lesbian couple’s rights. I didn’t read anywhere, however, speech on behalf of the taxpayers who now have to foot the bill. Or more importantly, anyone’s advocating for the child’s welfare. Really, the questions a healthy society would ask, are ‘what kind of person doesn’t want to support his child” and “what kind of people would weigh the ‘rights’ of adults over the welfare of children in this way?”

  4. So, er, Vincent … you’re happy with education descending into a load of fascism … no choice for anyone … no independent thinking/acting … – or have I misunderstood you? Ja
