The latest in woke children’s books

See below for a selection of books from the children’s section in Chapters.

I grew up with Narnia, Wind in the Willows, The Famous Five, Biggles, Winnie the Pooh and Worzel Gummidge, for which I owe an eternal debt of gratitude to my mother.

I’m so relieved I won’t be around to see the results of this:

  1. I was born Jan 23, 1960, read ‘Wind In The Willows’ in Grade 4 in Maple Grove in Kerrisdale. There was racism & homophobia in those days, when it went on, nothing was done about it. Now, it’s dealt with. Some of these books, 4 of them, seems good, the ones about Environment, Activism, Racism & ‘Woke Baby’. The 2 ones on feminism, not sure?

  2. Biggles would certainly have been unmanned by this exhibition. I believe the great hero of Biggles Defies The Swastika would have quailed in the face of this cultural blitzkrieg!

  3. As an act of respect for mourning Indigenous Communities who have endured genocide the Canadian flag will fly half-mast on July 1st, 2021;
at the same time the same Liberal Regime is desperately “negotiating” with the Senate to expedite the passing of Bills C-6 and 10…the prospective guardians of woke with no exceptions, children’s books above all to continue the indoctrination now rampant in schools and, yes, some Churches – the RC leading the way here in Canada.
    This is the very same Senate whose Trudeau B.C. Appointee publicly discouraged the Conservative Motion of Senator Leo Housakos to be critical of PRC on Uyghur persecution now tantamount to genocide; and for the Olympics to be relocated – 1936 redux;
which said Motion failed:29 for; 33 against; 13 abstain.
    The ultimate in PRC woke.
    Better keep that flag half-mast.

    • Canadian flag fully lowered by her loyal 5 Eyes Allies – minus two:
Canada and New Zealand left out of AUKUS.
Now the treasonous Liberals’ rationale for the absolute power Pandemic Election becomes clear..

      • ‘Canada Decides’ on Pastor Peter Youngren’s ‘You Are Loved’ on Vision TV is perhaps the only review of key issues, not only for Christians but for the freedom of all Canadians; as guest Pastors question why this Election? Canada’s being denied party to AUKUS is the most telling answer: the Trudeau Regime is in lock step with Communist China and has reinforced this authoritarian alliance by means of Trudeau I’s un-Constitutional inner sanctum of the Prime Minister’s Office to subvert the lawful authority of Parliament. A vote for any Liberal in this GE is a vote FOR Communist China. May The LORD in His Mercy and Wisdom deliver our Nation from such evil.

        • Windsor, Ontario
          Press Conference
“We’re not in the market for nuclear submarines.”
PM Trudeau re Canada excluded from. AUKUS
Ah, but who is, is that not the national security issue for the free world?

  4. It seems to me that a “woke” person is one who is attentive to racial discrimination and the issues surrounding it. Racism is nothing new. In fact, nothing is new under the sun. But the Good News is that Jesus came to save the world, both Jews and Gentiles. He superseded all barriers of race, culture, and ethnicity with His death on the cross. I believe that ethnicity is a gift from God. Ethnicity is present in the eternal state (Revelation 21-22).

    • Increasingly, a “woke” person is one who merely pretends to be attentive to racial injustice in order to signal their virtue. Ironically, the hallmark of being “woke” nowadays is to manifest anti-white racial bigotry in the name of anti-racism: this is the purpose of newly coined lexicon of “systemic racism,” “white privilege”, “white fragility”, “white rage”, or just straightforward so-called “whiteness”. Just read Robin DiAngelo and her ilk. Each of these accusations is lobbed at white persons (or those who are insufficiently woke). “Whites” are now to the Woke what the “bourgeoisie” used to be to Marxists, Leninists and Communists. The countervailing Biblical view is that all races are fallen, yet all are loved by God, and all can be eternally redeemed through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, without regard to race.

  5. David, the net seems to have people suffering from 2 new “syndromes”. It’s probably best to discuss sensitive opinions in person, rather than on a forum such as FB or Twitter. Always interesting to read the replies on your site however.

VIRTUAL SIGNALING and SLACKTIVISIM . Please look them up if you don’t know what they are. You may be suffering from them.

    How to avoid virtue signaling
In some cases, you may want to avoid virtue signaling yourself, as a result of the issues associated with this type of behavior.
The first step to doing this is to consider your statements and actions, to determine whether what you’re doing constitutes virtue signaling. In essence, the main questions you should ask yourself are:
Am I saying or doing this primarily to display my good moral values to others?
Are my statements or actions disingenuous in some way, such as in that I haven’t actually made a meaningful positive impact with regard to what’s being discussed?
When doing this, you may find it beneficial to use debiasing techniques, such as slowing down your reasoning process, which will help you assess yourself more accurately.
If you do determine that you’re engaging in virtue signaling, or are about to do so, then you should modify your behavior accordingly, to make sure that it truly aligns with what you hope to achieve.
When doing this, it can help to consider why you engage in such behavior in the first place, and to learn about the value-action gap, which often leads people to engage in virtue signaling in cases where they truly do want to make a positive difference, but fail to do so.

    Slacktivism
Slacktivism is the practice of supporting a cause in a way that requires little effort or commitment, and which consequently has little impact. For example, sharing a post about a social issue is a form of slacktivism, if that’s the only thing that the person does in support of that cause.
Slacktivism is often a form of virtue signaling, in cases where its main goal is to signal one’s good moral values. It is particularly associated with social media and online petitions, where this type of behavior is common.
A related term in this regard is clicktivism, which refers to slacktivism specifically in the online context. Another related term is hashtag activism, which refers to the use of activism to direct conversations on social media, though ‘hashtag activism’ has less negative connotations that the term ‘slacktivism’, which is almost always used in a negative way.
Note that a significant issue with slacktivism is that the largely meaningless actions that it involves can sometimes come at the expense of more meaningful actions that people might have taken otherwise. This is based on the concept of moral self-licensing, which occurs when acting virtuously in one instance causes people to feel that it’s acceptable to engage in immoral behavior in other instances. This is also a potential issue with regular charitable behavior, but in the case of slacktivism, it’s magnified by the fact that this behavior isn’t counterbalanced by meaningful positive behavior, as well as by the fact that slacktivism is much easier to engage in.

    • Rob,

The net seems to be suffering from more than the two syndromes that you have apparently imputed to David.

For example, a third syndrome from which the net is suffering is something called “plagiarism”; this occurs when one copiously quotes someone else’s work without giving proper attribution. Your advice to David appears to copy freely from the Effectiviology website without giving attribution. Are you the author of the Effectiviology blog or have you plagiarized his material? I will let other readers check the original source of your advice by pointing them to the following link:

      https://effectiviology.com/virtue-signaling

Second, the Effectiviology blog warns people not to jump to the conclusion that someone is “virtue signaling” because there could be other reasons/motivations for a person saying what they are saying. Have you heeded that advice–by not carelessly and falsely imputing the goal of “virtue signaling” to David without having sufficient evidence? Are you truly qualified to judge his motives and to prescribe a solution from someone’s online blog?

Third, given that your motives for calling out David are unclear, I note that the above-cited blog also warns that calling someone out for virtue signaling can be a sign of wanting to feel morally superior yourself, i.e., is a form of engaging in virtue signaling of your own. Is there any possibility that you yourself may be “virtue signaling” or yourself engaging in “slacktivism” by lecturing David on the same?

      • Many of us have noticed that the left are criticizing people on the right for doing things and having attitudes that they clearly have themselves. Very chuckle-able!

  6. Humans cannot see what God sees. We must rely on God for wisdom, not on ourselves. God looks at our hearts (I Samuel 16:7). He knows our motives and our dark secrets. He knows our true character. By the grace of God, we can grow in the faith daily. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can learn to see what God sees, and we can behave appropriately.
