Canada changing civil marriage law

From here:

Canada has to update its civil marriage law to recognize gay unions for couples who live outside the country, Justice Minister Rob Nicholson said Friday.

The irony is the law is being changed not to make it easier for same-sex couples to marry, but to make easier for them to divorce. No doubt in another few years same-sex couples will decide marriage is irrelevant and simply shack up together. There is a bizarre symmetry in all this.

The case arose out of a court filing where a federal lawyer said Canada couldn’t grant a lesbian couple a divorce because they were never married in the first place. One woman lives in England and one in Florida. Neither jurisdiction recognizes same-sex marriage.

  1. What is ridiculous here is that anyone can come to Canada and get married but to divorce in Canada you have to be a resident here for a minimum of 12 months.

  2. The funny thing is how the liberal media, eg. the Globe and Mail and the CBC went completely over the top on how this was an evil plot against gays and lesbians. Turns out that the law is the law, has been for a long time, and is the same for same-sex ‘marriages’ and straight.
They should be completely embarrassed, but probably not.

  3. It’s one thing to advocate for Canadian gay marriage as a social justice issue, but who wants Canada to be a shining destination for gay wedding safaris? And why should Canada be pressured into changing its long established marriage case law so that failed international gay marriages participants,(whose own countries don’t recognize their marriages anyways), can have “closure”? Ridiculous!

    • Fact: Sexual activity and piraing between animals of the same sex IS found in nature, therefore natural. Videos on youtube are evidence. In the end, God is not saying anything. These are men who say that they have the authority to speak 4 God. Which man you believe speaks 4 God or is a prophet is a matter of your particular cultural history. That’s why religion must be separate from the State. If you want a Biblical marriage that is your right, but you cant force others to believe in that too.

  5. Perhaps we should require people to be resident here for at least 12 months in order to be allowed to get married here. That way the rules for marraige would be the same as those for divorce.

  6. Amp,
    Think about it.
The only reason this is a problem is that the vast majority of the world only recognizes marriage as between a man and a woman. There’s no issue for divorce in the home countries if the original marriage here was male/female.
On the other hand, since Canada has allowed its fast and loose interpretation of marriage to contaminate the global community, you may have a point. It’s our responsibility to clean up the mess we created.
