Anglican Church of Canada attendance dropping 10% per year

The decline was 10% per year for 2020 and 2021. 2022 may not be much better since the two dioceses (Kootenay and Fredericton) that have produced data show an attendance decline of 32% and 37% from 2019 to 2022.

Christmas and Easter attendance for those two dioceses was down almost 50%.

It’s just as well the bishops are concentrating all their efforts on reversing this trend by authorising transgender liturgies.

The report is here and the Journal article is here.

Data for 2021 confirm attendance in the Anglican Church of Canada declined by about 10 per cent that year, after a similar drop in 2020, the church’s statistics officer says, while preliminary findings from 2022 suggest it continued in a steep decline into the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2019, statistics officer Canon Neil Elliot released a report that described a downward trend of 2.5 per cent per year—a rate that would see the church’s membership depleted entirely by 2040 if it continued. An update with data from 2020 showed the downward trend had accelerated to about 10 per cent that year, with data that was preliminary at the time suggesting a similar rate of decline for 2021. The latest numbers confirm the latter, Elliot says.

  1. This is definitely not surprising as the ACoC has basically denounced the Gospel and worships the god of political expediency. The only way it can reverse the problem is to return to the TRUTH which means that most of the so-called bishops need to be removed from their offices.

  2. I was a regular attender in Kootenay region for 40+ years and finally left with deep sorrow at the state of things under the newest bishop. Our family was married, buried and baptized at this church during those 40 years.
My heart is broken. I loved the Anglican Church. Those in charge would rather chase a non existent lgbtq congregation than take care of those faithful congregants under their care.
No visit from priest or any concern about my welfare, although I outlined my concerns. They were too busy ordaining the newest gay priest.
Now it’s even worse stuff they are pushing. During Covid I heard that only jabbed people could enter the doors of our local church. How is that ‘inclusive’?
Now they want to alter the liturgy!
Those in charge seem to have lost their collective minds. This is looking more and more like the great falling away, or great apostasy spoken of in Revelation.

  3. I am a church member in the Diocese of Fredericton. We are a more conservative diocese and so is our Bishop David Edwards.

    • A more correct statement would be that you and your Bishop stand for the Gospel and have not fallen into the worship of the god of political expedience.

  4. It has reached the point where to stay in the ACoC is to support the physical mutilation of young girls’ and young boys’ bodies. It is that serious. Is that a “come out from among them” voice I hear?

  5. My old Church former St John’s (Shaughnessy) now St John’s Vancouver know of 3 families who’s mom & dad still attend but children don’t anymore.

A pretty bad family splits with hurting feelings too amongst Staff, etc.

2002 split Diocese Of New West over ‘Blessing Same-Sex Unions’.

Diocese worked on it for 30 years.

Former Primate Michael Peers accompanied by the then Secretary Michael Ingham developed the Rite To ‘Bless Same-Sex Unions’.

Now Bishop Michael Ingham allowed the Rite before The Anglican Church did is allowed as Bishop.

It’s a ‘Lower Rite’ not ‘Full Bond Of Matrimony’ is a compromise.

Only -some- were given licenses to ‘Bless Same-Sex Unions’.

Less than ones who wanted to do.

I’m well read am told I’m very smart & have insight too.

We became part of New Province called ‘The Anglican Church Of North America’ but Canterbury sais, “You’re an -Ecumenical Partner”, but the Church still identifies as Anglican using the same name too.

Our Sunday 9am Service used to be well attended but has been losing #s anybody can just attend & (see) what’s going on is not good.

When I think of (see) think of, ‘Taste & (See) that the Lord is good.

    1st & foremost focus.

    Turn To The Lord.

    Seek Ye The Lord

  6. So here we have a General Synod who receive a report that the denomination has declined in attendance by an estimated 40% since the last General Synod 4 years ago, but the powers that be didn’t feel this was important enough to be placed on the agenda for discussion. I’m shocked! What other organization’s members would allow such a travesty?

I notice that Dr. Elliot did not revise his prediction for the demise of the denomination from his previous estimate of 2040. Based on these new statistics, it is probably closer to 2030. What is the exit plan? Is this being discussed?

And this is not to mention the non-election of a new Primate. Maybe nobody will allow their name to stand as they don’t want to be the officiant at the funeral.

There seems to be a significant level of incompetence here. Lord Have Mercy!
