Muslim prayer room opens in Catholic high school

The Principal wants to ensure that all our students feel welcome. Fair enough, but will the inclusive, tolerant Principal go for maximum diversity and hold her gay-straight alliance club meetings in the same room? They could share the prayer mats.

From here:

LONDON, ONT. – Mother Teresa Catholic secondary school is turning a second-floor office into an Islamic prayer room — the first high school in the city, private or public, to do so.

Carpet will soon cover the tile flooring, speakers will be installed and prayer mats purchased to provide the school’s Muslim students, estimated at around two dozen, with a quiet and private place to pray.

The idea has been in the works since the end of the last school year after a group of Muslim students lobbied administration to create the space.

“They’re members of our school community. We want to ensure that all our students feel welcome, that they feel that they belong,” said Principal Ana Paula Fernandes.

  1. Take it from someone who knows; the Catholic schools in Ontario are Catholic in name only these days, in more ways than one. I could write a book based on my own shock-and-awe from having children in this system for several years. Most of you really would not believe what is considered acceptable at present in the schools under Catholic boards. Not that the public system is any better, but then again, they haven’t been established to uphold certain moral and cultural viewpoints.

  2. I wonder how long it will take for Muslim schools, etc. to make prayer rooms available for Christians or Jews. Not that I’m going to hold my breath while I’m waiting.

  3. A catholic school is to teach the Catholic faith or close the doors, and not make ANY allowances for other faiths. If the Priests and Bishops running this School do not have the courage to believe in ONE HOLY CATHOLIC and APOSTOLIC faith, then they should call it quits. Bringing souls to Christ is what it is all about.
