Anglican reactions to impending supreme court abortion ruling

The Episcopal Church has issued the following statement:

Episcopal Church statement on reports concerning Supreme Court case pertaining to abortion

May 3, 2022

Office of Government Relations

Since 1967, The Episcopal Church has maintained its “unequivocal opposition to any legislation on the part of the national or state governments which would abridge or deny the right of individuals to reach informed decisions [about the termination of pregnancy] and to act upon them.” In light of the recent report about a pending decision in the Supreme Court case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, The Episcopal Church reaffirms our commitment to “equitable access to women’s health care, including women’s reproductive health care,” which we view as “an integral part of a woman’s struggle to assert her dignity and worth as a human being.” The Office of Government Relations will continue to advocate at the federal level to protect reproductive rights.

We encourage you to read this overview of The Episcopal Church’s positions on abortion and women’s reproductive health.

Put into simple terms, removing the euphemisms and Newspeak, TEC is endorsing the murder of unborn babies. An organisation promoting such a demonically inspired abomination should not be afforded the dignity of being called a Christian Church.

The Anglican Church of Canada hierarchy, being largely populated with spineless poltroons, has remained silent on the issue. Apart, that is, from the intrepid Rev. Michael Coren who cannot resist coming down on the wrong side of an ethical conundrum whenever he has the opportunity.

Read Coren’s claptrap here:

There is nothing Christian about allowing women to die in illegal back street abortions. Nothing Christian about removing the basic right of a woman to control her own body. Nothing Christian about wanting to criminalize female equality.

[….]

But what of scripture itself? The central point is that any ancient text, even one that is central to a religious faith and certainly crucial to my life and beliefs, has to be understood and interpreted in context and with understanding.

So, for example, when opponents of abortion quote Jeremiah — “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations” — they should grasp a few realities. First, this was written around 2,700 years ago. Second, the text is speaking of a single person, “a prophet to the nations” rather than making a sweeping comment about the beginning of life.

Or Psalm 139, “For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” This is poetry and metaphor, a beautiful testimony to God’s love but not a guide to human biology. The very idea is unbiblical.

The New Testament has Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, meeting Mary, mother of Jesus, and “the child leaped in her womb.” Again, a lyrical description of an event that shaped history, but not scientific and not supposed to be. If we’re to take a literalist approach to the Bible we’re in all sorts of trouble. By the way, it sometimes supports abortion, something the Christian right doesn’t like to mention.

  1. Coren is using standard revisionist techniques to confuse simple pewsitters. By taking away the clear meaning of scripture and giving it a new meaning he erodes one’s confidence and trust in the Bible. Once that is done, everything is open game.

Romans 16:17-18, “I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.”

  2. Amen to undergroundpewster’s post and + Romans 16 text.

While there is nothing Christian about leaving aborted babies to die unattended on their own (Northern Ireland posed this directly to PM Trudeau in 2017 v. online):
nor is there anything Christian about aborted “waste” being shipped from BC to USA
    to provide fuel -we’ve seen these chimneys before- (v online);
    nor is there anything Christian about utilizing aborted ‘material’ to enhance the ‘nutritional’ value of certain fast food products and soft drinks (v. online);
as for women’s’ equality’, ‘Canadian Cultural Party’ (May 5/22) has asked the Federal Cultural Marxist ‘Feminist’ Regime, and Biden’s/USA, to do an ethnic study on the one million baby souls who have perished in Canada: who were sex-selected among them. Females! MP Gould, Minister of Families, up for the job?
+ Luke 1 “Blessed art thou among women”.

  3. Given that this forum is free from smooth talk and flattery, I hope with all my heart that people who support the restriction or ending or safe legal abortions put their money where their mouths are. Cancel the post-pandemic holiday and stump up the cash to support parents with children who would otherwise have been aborted. Sell the cottage and fund organisations supporting Christians who adopt children. Examples from the UK include Home for Good, Pact, and Cornerstone. Not some many here in Canada, but the JFJ Hope Centre is one possibility. And for evangelicals who are tempted to use religious power politics to end abortion, Rob Schenck’s book Costly Grace is well worth a read. Let’s hope his money follows his mouth too.

    • There are no safe abortions for unborn babies. The victim is murdered.

And of course there are Christian organisations in Canada that help expectant mothers and mothers with their new babies. The Atwell Centre is one local example; there are many others and many Christians financially support them.

You may contribute to my church’s fundraising effort for the Atwell Centre here.

Christian education, planted and grounded in Holy Scripture, is the foundation for Christian belief and practice about the sanctity of all life, from conception to natural death. with the GOD Ordained order of Creation of family of male/husband and female/wife, with the GOD Ordained blessing of children, who belong to The LORD
      + Genesis 1,2,; Mathew 19 + Psalm 127. Amen.
Is this now the doctrine and practice of the mainline Churches? If not, why not?
When it had been, unwed mothers were cared for throughout; were the Churches sadly erred was to place the
babies in adopted homes. The Law is still deficient in
that the father of any child is not supporting the mother and child/children. Where is the protest of the Church in this?
To smear Evangelicals, the Bible-believing Remnant of our lawless times + II TImothy 3:1 ff, which times are “lovers of their own selves…without natural affection…”, as party to “religious power politics” is to ignore the brute fact that Canada is now tyrannized from cradle, to sick bed, to grave: the criminalization of any/all opposition
to abortion on demand; medical murder; and
sexual identity as LGBTQI or Trans, from coast to coast.
No conscience clause: e.g. St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
RC Mary Wagner underwent repeated jail time for her peaceful pro-life protests – Canada’s ‘Little Sister of the Poor’.
PEI, the last Province in this Dominion to be a ‘Life Sanctuary’ ended when the current Federal Cultural Marxist Regime campaigned there in 2015 to terminate it: ‘promises’ made and kept.
