Is this a harbinger of the death of paper? Probably not in our <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2010\/08\/29\/article-1307205-0AF6435A000005DC-653_468x286.jpg\" alt=\"Add an Image\" width=\"204\" height=\"124\" \/>generation, but it is getting closer: although I have stacks of books on dusty shelves and still enjoy poking around in second-hand bookshops, most of the books I buy to read now are on a Kindle \u2013 same for newspaper subscriptions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It was first published in sections 126 years ago and is known the world over.<\/p>\n<p>But the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) will never appear in print again, its owners have announced.<\/p>\n<p>Instead the 80 lexicographers who have been working on the third edition for the past 21 years have been told it will exist solely online when it is complete.<\/p>\n<p>The OED has already been available on the internet for the last ten years and receives two million hits a month at a cost of \u00a3205 a year, plus VAT.<\/p>\n<p>Its owners, Oxford University Press (OUP), says the dominance of the internet means the latest update to the definitive record of the English language will never be published in print.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The print dictionary market is just disappearing, it is falling away by tens of per cent a year,&#8217; said Nigel Portwood, 44, chief executive of OUP.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Our primary purpose &#8211; and this takes a bit of adjusting to &#8211; is not profit, it is the dissemination of knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The university and I get very excited about digital because suddenly you can reach more people than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Print is still pretty important round here but, wherever possible, if there is an opportunity, we are moving out of it.&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is an interesting history of the OED <a href=\"http:\/\/oed.com\/about\/history.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.
