{"id":9348,"date":"2010-07-15T09:19:08","date_gmt":"2010-07-15T13:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=9348"},"modified":"2010-07-15T09:19:08","modified_gmt":"2010-07-15T13:19:08","slug":"why-is-diversity-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/why-is-diversity-good\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is diversity good?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Because it is has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-1294630\/Rochdale-shopping-centre-bosses-approve-Asian-squat-toilets.html\" target=\"_blank\">brought the squat toilet<\/a> to parts of the West hitherto unsullied by its seat-less discomfort.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.telegraph.co.uk\/telegraph\/multimedia\/archive\/01679\/nile_pan_1679369c.jpg\" alt=\"Add an Image\" width=\"460\" height=\"288\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For centuries, the great British loo has been a matter of envy to the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the efforts of pioneers like the legendary Thomas Crapper, we have long since led the world in comfort and hygiene.<\/p>\n<p>Now, however, that could be about to change.<\/p>\n<p>For most of us, the squat toilet is nothing more than a staple of horror stories about old-fashioned French service stations or the exploits of adventurous backpackers in far-flung parts of India.<\/p>\n<p>But this basic form of plumbing, also known as a Turkish toilet or Nile pan, could be coming to a shopping centre near you &#8211; and all in the name of cultural sensitivity.<\/p>\n<p>From next week, shoppers in Rochdale who push open the cubicle door expecting the reassuring sight of a modern, clean lavatory could instead be faced with little more than a hole in the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Bone, of the British Toilet Association, warned the washing facilities associated with squat toilets could pose a hygiene hazard.\u00a0 &#8216;We really don&#8217;t see a need for them,&#8217; he said. &#8216;Space for public toilets in places like shopping centres is already at a premium, and if this is meant to cater for Muslims we would point out that the vast majority use normal toilets in their own homes.&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Many years ago while cycling around Brittany I remember &#8211; after weeks of deprivation &#8211; the joy of luxuriating in the comfort of a hard-to-find proper Crapper toilet; primitive inconveniences have now made their way to the UK.
