If a film isn\u2019t entertaining, it is a waste of time as far as I am concerned; if it isn\u2019t entertaining <em>and <\/em>it contains a pretentious message, it deserves to be loathed \u2013 I loathed Avatar. If a film is entertaining and it manages to convey a message while avoiding the expected leftist Hollywood tendentiousness <em>and <\/em>my son \u2013 who is a film enthusiast \u2013 likes it, there must be something in it.<\/p>\n<p>I watched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1303828\/\" target=\"_blank\">Defendor<\/a> a few nights ago: it is a modernised cross between Cervantes\u2019 <em>Don Quixote<\/em> and Dostoevsky\u2019s <em>The Idiot<\/em>. Not as good as reading either book, of course, but worth a look if you have an idle couple of hours. The director, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_Stebbings\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Stebbings<\/a>, is Canadian and the town that our hero is defending is a thinly disguised Hamilton &#8211; a steel town not far from where I live which, from some angles, resembles Mordor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are very few films that I enjoy.
