{"id":7951,"date":"2010-03-29T20:23:29","date_gmt":"2010-03-30T00:23:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/?p=7951"},"modified":"2010-03-29T20:23:29","modified_gmt":"2010-03-30T00:23:29","slug":"a-muslim-student-doesnt-want-in-the-year-of-our-lord-on-his-diploma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/a-muslim-student-doesnt-want-in-the-year-of-our-lord-on-his-diploma\/","title":{"rendered":"A Muslim student doesn\u2019t want \u2018in the year of our Lord&#039; on his diploma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>And he has convinced a cadre of mindless dupes to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chron.com\/disp\/story.mpl\/life\/religion\/new\/6934689.html\">go along with him<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A group of students at Trinity University is lobbying trustees to drop a reference to \u201cOur Lord\u201d on their diplomas, arguing it does not respect the diversity of religions on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA diploma is a very personal item, and people want to proudly display it in their offices and homes,\u201d said Sidra Qureshi, president of Trinity Diversity Connection. \u201cBy having the phrase \u2018In the Year of Our Lord,&#8217; it is directly referencing Jesus Christ, and not everyone believes in Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Qureshi, who is Muslim, has led the charge to tweak the wording, winning support from student government and a campus commencement committee. Trustees are expected to consider the students&#8217; request at a May board meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Other students and President Dennis Ahlburg have defended the wording, arguing that references to the school&#8217;s Presbyterian roots are appropriate and unobtrusive.<\/p>\n<p>Founded by Presbyterians in 1869, Trinity has been governed by an independent board of trustees since 1969 but maintains a \u201ccovenant relationship\u201d with the church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny cultural reference, even if it is religious, our first instinct should not be to remove it, but to accept it and tolerate it,\u201d said Brendan McNamara, president of the College Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>McNamara pointed out that Trinity displays other signs of its Christian heritage, including a chapel on campus, a chaplain, Christmas vespers and a Bible etching on the Trinity seal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Why, I wonder, did a Muslim student attend a college with such overt Christian symbolism in evidence if he is too fastidious to have \u201cin the year of our Lord\u201d on his diploma?<\/p>\n<p>This could not possibly be an attempt to subvert Christianity in the interests of promoting Islam could it?
