{"id":7653,"date":"2010-03-05T16:48:11","date_gmt":"2010-03-05T21:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/?p=7653"},"modified":"2010-03-05T16:48:11","modified_gmt":"2010-03-05T21:48:11","slug":"diocese-of-toronto-going-down-slow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/diocese-of-toronto-going-down-slow\/","title":{"rendered":"Diocese of Toronto: going down slow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In April 2009, the ACoC House of Bishops declared a fiat that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglicanjournal.com\/canada\/hob\/005\/article\/house-of-bishops-message-to-the-church-covers-wide-range-of-topics\/?cHash=53a860e741\" target=\"_blank\">no member of ANiC<\/a> would be allowed to lead a Cursillo group.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The bishops also stated, \u201cwith regret,\u201d that clergy and laity who are members of the Anglican Network in Canada (ANiC) \u201cshould not be given permission to exercise a leadership role in the Cursillo movement of the Anglican Church of Canada.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In September 2009, ANiC formed its own Cursillo group under the name of Anglican 4thDay.<\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, the Diocese of Toronto\u2019s Cursillo has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.anglican.ca\/images\/mar10_anglican.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">ceased to be<\/a>; there couldn\u2019t be a connection, could there?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dec. 31, 2009, saw the end of the Diocese of Toronto\u2019s renewal movement called Cursillo. It had been established in 1976 by the late Rev. Canon Graham Tucker with the support of the late Archbishop Lewis Garnsworthy. Its mandate was to empower and train lay leaders.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the same issue of the Toronto diocesan paper, Fresh Expressions is exhorting ACoC Anglicans to indulge in the seemingly worthy, but ultimately futile fantasy of hastening the eschaton by trying to build the kingdom of God on earth:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>RACHEL Jordan has some advice for Anglicans who believe that someone else is going to build the kingdom of God here on Earth. \u201cThere isn\u2019t a Plan B \u2013 you\u2019re it,\u201d she says. \u201cYou are the people God has chosen to be his agents right here, right now.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Giving their buildings away \u2013 as long as it\u2019s not to ANiC:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ms. Jordan says tiny, dwindling congregations that are struggling to maintain large and costly churches can play a vital role in creating fresh expressions of church. \u201cIt may be time for them to say, \u2018If there are only 25 of us, then we don\u2019t need the big building with the leaky roof. We could give it away.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And \u201cheading into the unknown\u201d \u2013 a theological landscape currently occupied by bishops:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He says Christians don\u2019t need to be afraid to leave their churches and head into the unknown.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It sounds as if the Diocese of Toronto is in trouble and is about to start making the same Visionary Changes\u2122 that the <a href=\"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/26\/diocese-of-bc-makes-%E2%80%9Cvisionary%E2%80%9D-changes-closes-13-churches\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diocese of BC is making<\/a>: closing parishes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In April 2009, the ACoC House of Bishops declared a fiat that no member of ANiC would be allowed to lead a Cursillo group.
