{"id":7634,"date":"2010-03-03T22:54:17","date_gmt":"2010-03-04T03:54:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/?p=7634"},"modified":"2010-03-03T22:54:17","modified_gmt":"2010-03-04T03:54:17","slug":"a-pub-called-medina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/a-pub-called-medina\/","title":{"rendered":"A pub called Medina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/scotsol\/homepage\/news\/2875451\/Muslims-fury-at-holy-city-boozer-in-Dundee-named-Medina.html\" target=\"_blank\">provoked the ire<\/a> of a Muslim \u2013 who really should get out more:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A MUSLIM leader has blasted a pub for using the name of holy city Medina &#8211; branding it an insult to his religion.<\/p>\n<p>The boozer in Dundee changed its name from Bar Rio to Medina Bar and Grill after a renovation.<\/p>\n<p>But this has sparked outrage &#8211; as Saudi Arabian city Medina is the second-holiest site in Islam behind Mecca.<\/p>\n<p>Medina is also a term used for a market or trading centre in north African cities.<\/p>\n<p>But Mohammed Bashir Chohan, chairman of the Dundee Islamic Society, last night said: &#8220;People are upset about it because Medina is a holy city. It does hurt when somebody misuses the name, especially if they are going to sell liquor.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Medina is also the name of, among other things, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medinacafe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">caf\u00e9<\/a> in Vancouver, a food <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medinaquality.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">quality control company<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clubrunner.ca\/CPrg\/home\/homeS.asp?cid=5207\" target=\"_blank\">Rotary club<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/1261\/medina\" target=\"_blank\">board game<\/a>, and a conspicuously <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=b_AF99dZEow\" target=\"_blank\">burkaless singer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s at least one <a href=\"http:\/\/princeyblog.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/personal-bio.html\" target=\"_blank\">dog named Medina<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Has provoked the ire of a Muslim \u2013 who really should get out more: A MUSLIM leader has blasted a pub for using the name of holy city Medina &#8211; branding it an insult to his religion.
