{"id":7533,"date":"2010-02-20T12:33:31","date_gmt":"2010-02-20T17:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/?p=7533"},"modified":"2010-02-20T12:33:31","modified_gmt":"2010-02-20T17:33:31","slug":"weightlifting-ant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/weightlifting-ant\/","title":{"rendered":"Weightlifting ant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/uk_news\/8526086.stm\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/newsimg.bbc.co.uk\/media\/images\/47340000\/jpg\/_47340444_008791133-1.jpg\" alt=\"Add an Image\" width=\"226\" height=\"282\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>An amazing image of an ant lifting 100 times its body weight has won first prize in a science photography contest.<\/p>\n<p>The image shows an Asian weaver ant hanging upside down on a glass-like surface and holding a 500mg (0.02oz) weight in its jaws.<\/p>\n<p>It was taken by zoology specialist Dr Thomas Endlein of Cambridge University as he researched insects&#8217; sticky feet.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Endlein won \u00a3700 in photographic vouchers from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.<\/p>\n<p>The research shows how ants change the size and shape of the pads on their feet to enable them to carry heavier loads.<\/p>\n<p>He hopes it could help scientists develop better glues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The pads on ants&#8217; feet are self-cleaning and can stick to almost any type of surface,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No man-made glue or adhesive system can match this. Understanding how animals can control their adhesive systems should help us come up with clever adhesives in the future.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I just want to make sure that everyone understands that no Design was used in the making of this ant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the BBC An amazing image of an ant lifting 100 times its body weight has won first prize in a science photography contest.
