{"id":7134,"date":"2010-01-19T23:24:52","date_gmt":"2010-01-20T04:24:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/?p=7134"},"modified":"2010-01-19T23:24:52","modified_gmt":"2010-01-20T04:24:52","slug":"whatever-you-do-dont-mention-the-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/whatever-you-do-dont-mention-the-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Whatever you do, don\u2019t mention the war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is almost no-one left that it is permissible to stereotype; <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/uk_news\/8469347.stm\" target=\"_blank\">now Germans are out<\/a>, apparently.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A radio advertisement has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for implying Germans are tyrants.<\/p>\n<p>Complaints were upheld about a Reed recruitment website commercial, which had an angry boss speaking in German.<\/p>\n<p>The ASA said it could cause serious offence to some listeners and was found to be offensive because it used a negative stereotype.<\/p>\n<p>The advert had sparked 13 complaints from the public, but Reed did not comment on them.<\/p>\n<p>The ASA also said that while the use of stereotypes was &#8220;inevitable&#8221; to establish a character in a short radio advert, this should not &#8220;perpetuate damaging misconceptions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The watchdog said: &#8220;We noted the ad used a German speaker, rather than someone speaking English, to portray the boss as &#8216;a bit of a tyrant&#8217; and the humour derived from a stereotype at the expense of German people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a shame really, since up until now I have been killing Nazis in Wolfenstein 2 with a completely clear conscience \u2013 I\u2019d hate to <em>&#8220;perpetuate damaging misconceptions&#8221;<\/em>, though.
