{"id":7027,"date":"2010-01-11T20:41:12","date_gmt":"2010-01-12T01:41:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/?p=7027"},"modified":"2010-01-11T20:41:12","modified_gmt":"2010-01-12T01:41:12","slug":"the-anglican-church-of-canada-in-a-downward-spiral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/the-anglican-church-of-canada-in-a-downward-spiral\/","title":{"rendered":"The Anglican Church of Canada in a downward spiral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Diocese of Quebec is at <a href=\"http:\/\/geoconger.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/13\/church-in-quebec-is-dying-cen-12-04-09-p-7\/\" target=\"_blank\">death\u2019s doorstep<\/a>, with others to follow; and there will be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglicanjournal.com\/canada\/hob\/005\/article\/fewer-staff-at-national-office-forecast\/?cHash=bafaa7b445\" target=\"_blank\">staff cuts<\/a> at head office.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Fewer staff at national office forecast.<\/p>\n<p>It will be a \u201cchallenging\u201d year for staff at the General Synod office in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>More budget cuts will be needed to achieve a balanced budget for 2011 and eliminate deficits by 2012, said Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s another cut to come and it will be bigger,\u201d Archbishop Hiltz told a meeting of the House of Bishops held Jan. 7 to 9. \u201cWe\u2019ll look at a smaller staff.\u201d He said that decisions will be guided by priorities that will be set out at the upcoming General Synod this June.<\/p>\n<p>The primate also reported that he met with the metropolitans (senior bishops) of the four ecclesiastical provinces last December as part of a team-building effort. All agreed to build a relationship where there is \u201ccollegial leadership, accountability, mutual support,\u201d and where their meetings can be a \u201cclearinghouse for information-sharing.\u201d They hope to meet once a year.<\/p>\n<p>A new draft of Vision 2019, the church\u2019s long-term strategic plan, is being prepared for presentation to the Council of General Synod in March, the primate reported. There have been \u201cmixed\u201d reactions to the initial draft, he said. Some have criticized it as \u201cnothing new, a rearrangement of deck chairs,\u201d and others have said \u201cit\u2019s quite good.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not to worry; the ACoC will concentrate on <em>team building, collegial leadership, accountability and mutual support. <\/em> That should sort things out; meanwhile, pass me a deck-chair.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is, Fred Hiltz is all set to reproduce his successes with the ACoC at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglicanjournal.com\/100\/article\/primate-to-lead-canadian-delegation-to-world-religions-summit\/?cHash=e3849d110f\" target=\"_blank\">World Religions Summit<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, has accepted an invitation to lead the Canadian delegation to the 2010 World Religions Summit to be held in Winnipeg this June.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I could not imagine a cause more deserving to be torpedoed by Fred&#8217;s ministrations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Diocese of Quebec is at death\u2019s doorstep, with others to follow; and there will be staff cuts at head office.
