{"id":6891,"date":"2009-12-31T13:35:06","date_gmt":"2009-12-31T18:35:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/?p=6891"},"modified":"2009-12-31T13:35:06","modified_gmt":"2009-12-31T18:35:06","slug":"transforming-christianity-into-a-social-club-the-anglican-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/transforming-christianity-into-a-social-club-the-anglican-way\/","title":{"rendered":"Transforming Christianity into a social club \u2013 the Anglican way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don\u2019t normally pick on individual Anglican parishes however severe the temptation, but in the case of St. Aidan\u2019s, Oakville I am going to make an exception because its rector, Cheryl Fricker, was one of four rectors who attempted to set up a Potemkin parish at St. Hilda\u2019s by <a href=\"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/2009\/04\/27\/diocese-of-niagara-building-occupation-101\/\" target=\"_blank\">staging weekly sit-ins<\/a> with some of her congregation \u2013 well, also because I feel like it.<\/p>\n<p>St. Aidan\u2019s newsletter, the <a href=\"http:\/\/langdonmills.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/messenger2009.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Messenger<\/a> is a wonderful example of the church as Social Club, a place where the petite bourgeoisie of one of the wealthiest towns in Canada can play-act at <em>embracing those in need <\/em>(in the nicest possible way), being a <em>community hub <\/em>and <em>partnering with others<\/em>. As the Messenger reveals, at St. Aidan\u2019s one can find everything from the aesthetic in the grant-funded Arthouse, to the environmental in pious <em>green sustainability<\/em> advice, to pop psychology in the Self-Esteem Support Group.<\/p>\n<p>One article in particular caught my attention: <em>Reaching Out <\/em>by Ann Wood. In the article, Anne extols the virtues of a welcoming church:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then we added a picture. It shows the congregation heading into the church as the bell rings for the morning service. There we are, walking up the path and shortcutting across the lawn, families, couples, singles, older, teens, and small kids tossing the fall leaves. The Minister is holding the door open. &#8220;That&#8217;s us,&#8221; the picture says, &#8220;We&#8217;re going into our church, come on in!&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It sounds all very cosy and would by an entirely unremarkable description were it not for the fact that Ann Wood \u2013 whom I affectionately think of as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.ca\/imgres?imgurl=http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2008\/12\/15\/article-1094650-02CE2A5E000005DC-935_468x669.jpg&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-1094650\/Clegg-Co-mourn-Nora-Batty-actress-Kathy-Staff.html&amp;h=669&amp;w=468&amp;sz=106&amp;tbnid=ymUu55dpChd4_M:&amp;tbnh=138&amp;tbnw=97&amp;prev=\/images%3Fq%3Dnora%2Bbatty&amp;usg=__KdSMl1swrbcTqupZn0MMIFPZmds=&amp;ei=n_w4S9m1ItOOlAf96ameBw&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=image_result&amp;resnum=5&amp;ct=image&amp;ved=0CA8Q9QEwBA\" target=\"_blank\">Nora Batty<\/a> &#8211; is the notorious <a href=\"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/2009\/04\/12\/the-diocese-of-niagara-is-employing-bouncers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diocese of Niagara Bouncer<\/a> who marched me out of St. Hilda\u2019s on Easter Day in 2009.
