{"id":6375,"date":"2009-11-21T19:18:31","date_gmt":"2009-11-22T00:18:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/?p=6375"},"modified":"2009-11-21T19:18:31","modified_gmt":"2009-11-22T00:18:31","slug":"diocese-of-niagara-budget-meltdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/diocese-of-niagara-budget-meltdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Diocese of Niagara: budget meltdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Diocese of Niagara had its synod on Friday and Saturday; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niagara.anglican.ca\/synod_2009\/budget.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">budget was contentious<\/a> \u2013 so contentious that it was not passed and is no longer on the diocesan web site.<\/p>\n<p>The budget called for a 32% cut to St. Matthews House and a 33% cut to campus ministry. Apparently, \u201c<em>there is no money in the budget beyond salaries. In 6 weeks a third of our total revenue will disappear. We will not be able to pay salaries in 6 weeks.\u201d <\/em><strong>Note: I have had some clarification of this statement from someone who was at synod and the &#8220;salaries&#8221; that are being referred to are those of the people working on the university campus, not of people working for the diocese itself; I am cancelling the party and putting the champagne away &#8211; for the moment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The budget was sent back to the budget finance subcommittee and a synod will be held no later than March 31<sup>st<\/sup> 2010 to vote on the new budget; assuming the budget finance committee is still employed at that point. I am reassured to see that Michael Bird has not volunteered a cut to his $105k per year salary; after all, you have to pay if you want the best.<\/p>\n<p>As Bishop Michael Bird pointed out, this is called <em>\u201cLiving the Vision\u201d<\/em> (he really did \u2013 look near the bottom <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niagara.anglican.ca\/synod_2009\/budget.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Diocese of Niagara had its synod on Friday and Saturday; the budget was contentious \u2013 so contentious that it was not passed and is no longer on the diocesan web site.
