{"id":6328,"date":"2009-11-17T12:00:25","date_gmt":"2009-11-17T17:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/?p=6328"},"modified":"2009-11-17T12:00:25","modified_gmt":"2009-11-17T17:00:25","slug":"rowan-williams-salvation-through-taxation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/rowan-williams-salvation-through-taxation\/","title":{"rendered":"Rowan Williams: salvation through taxation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rowan Williams, in a last ditch effort to attract people back to the Anglican Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/newstopics\/religion\/6582190\/Archbishop-of-Canterbury-claims-higher-taxes-would-be-good-for-society.html\" target=\"_blank\">has suggested<\/a> that they should pay more taxes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Higher levels of tax would be good for society, according to the Archbishop of Canterbury.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Rowan Williams said that taxation should not be seen as a way of stifling business or redistributing wealth but helping to make the world a better place in which to live.<\/p>\n<p>He called for new levies to be introduced on financial transactions and carbon emissions, and an end to the idea that unlimited economic growth is desirable.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Williams claimed that the \u201cfantasies of unlimited growth\u201d had led to a    \u201cvicious cycle\u201d in which consumers are encouraged to buy more goods, which    also uses up limited energy and raw materials.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he said the economy should be geared towards creating a secure and    sustainable environment for families.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this, the archbishop said: \u201cWe have to ask about \u2018green taxes\u2019    (including \u2018green\u2019 tax breaks) that will check environmental    irresponsibility and build up resources to address the ecological crises    that menace us.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For the Pope picking off disenchanted Anglicans, it\u2019s like shooting fish in a barrel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rowan Williams, in a last ditch effort to attract people back to the Anglican Church, has suggested that they should pay more taxes: Higher levels of tax would be good for society, according to the Archbishop of Canterbury.
