{"id":6183,"date":"2009-11-04T09:26:57","date_gmt":"2009-11-04T14:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/?p=6183"},"modified":"2009-11-04T09:26:57","modified_gmt":"2009-11-04T14:26:57","slug":"transsexual-jesus-sparks-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/transsexual-jesus-sparks-protests\/","title":{"rendered":"Transsexual Jesus sparks protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/uk_news\/scotland\/glasgow_and_west\/8342056.stm\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>About 300 protesters held a candlelit protest outside a Glasgow theatre over the staging of a play which portrays Jesus as a transsexual.<\/p>\n<p>The protest was held outside the Tron Theatre, where Jesus Queen of Heaven, in which Christ is a man who wants to become a woman, is being staged.<\/p>\n<p>It is part of the Glasgay! arts festival, a celebration of Scotland&#8217;s gay, bi-sexual and transsexual culture.<\/p>\n<p>Festival organisers said it had not intended to incite or offend anyone.<\/p>\n<p>The Christian protesters gathered outside the theatre ahead of the opening night of the production on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus Queen of Heaven, which runs until Saturday, is written and performed by transsexual playwright Jo Clifford.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrators sang hymns and waved placards.<\/p>\n<p>One read: &#8220;Jesus, King of Kings, Not Queen of Heaven.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another said: &#8220;God: My Son Is Not A Pervert.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Festival organisers described the banners as &#8220;fairly provocative&#8221; and said they could be viewed as inciting homophobia.<\/p>\n<p>Glasgay! producer Steven Thomson said: &#8220;Jesus Queen of Heaven is a literary work of fiction exploring the artists own personal journey of faith as a transgendered person.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Glasgay! supports the right to freedom of expression and offers audiences a diverse view of LGBT life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let me see if I have this right: the festival organisers object to demonstrators exercising freedom of expression, calling it <em>homophobia, <\/em>while at the same time proclaiming their right to portray the person whom 2 billion people believe to be God incarnate as a sexual pervert \u2013 in the name of freedom of expression.<\/p>\n<p>More on this <a href=\"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/14\/defaming-jesus-in-scotland\/#comment-2435\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the BBC: About 300 protesters held a candlelit protest outside a Glasgow theatre over the staging of a play which portrays Jesus as a transsexual.
