Their predominant theme is good vs. evil, \u00a0and yes, there is magic, sorcery and witchcraft &#8211; just as there is in  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/newsimg.bbc.co.uk\/media\/images\/46468000\/jpg\/_46468511_rowling_pa226b.jpg\" alt=\"Add an Image\" width=\"226\" height=\"282\" \/>J.R.R. Tolkien. Although Rowling is  not in the same league as C.S. Lewis or J.R.R. Tolkien, I think her books are an entertaining read and relatively harmless; <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/entertainment\/8282356.stm\" target=\"_blank\">not all agree<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Harry Potter author JK Rowling missed out on a top honour because some US politicians believed she &#8220;encouraged witchcraft&#8221;, it has been claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Latimer, former speech writer for President George W Bush, said that some members of his administration believed her books promoted sorcery.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, she was never presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.<\/p>\n<p>The claims appear in Latimer&#8217;s new book called Speechless: Tales of a White House Survivor.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote that &#8220;narrow thinking&#8221; led White House officials to object to giving Rowling the civilian honour.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Presidential_Medal_of_Freedom\" target=\"_blank\">Presidential Medal of Freedom<\/a> is awarded for:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It recognizes those individuals whom have made &#8220;an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However much I enjoyed Harry Potter, outside Rowling\u2019s fantasy world, I can\u2019t see him contributing much to culture and nothing at all to <em>world peace, <\/em>whatever that is.<em> <\/em>Surely the reason Rowling was not given this award was because it has no relevance to her work. Still, I imagine she must be pretty upset as she ponders the slight on her way to depositing the next million in her local Barclays.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve read all the Harry Potter books and I thoroughly enjoyed them.
