{"id":5744,"date":"2009-09-21T12:18:27","date_gmt":"2009-09-21T16:18:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/?p=5744"},"modified":"2009-09-21T12:18:27","modified_gmt":"2009-09-21T16:18:27","slug":"the-olympic-truce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/the-olympic-truce\/","title":{"rendered":"The Olympic Truce"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The CBC announces <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/canada\/british-columbia\/story\/2009\/09\/18\/bc-furlong-olympic-truce.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Olympic Truce<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Next month, Canada will ask the United Nations to pass a resolution that calls for all countries to &#8220;promote the ideals of peace&#8221; during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution will ask countries to adopt what&#8217;s known as the Olympic Truce, which calls on the world community to cease hostilities during the Games and promote the ideals of peace through sport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe [the resolution] will be supported by every country,&#8221; said John Furlong, the CEO of Vancouver&#8217;s Olympic organizing committee.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think one of the most important things is to draw to the attention of the world. The Olympic games are on and a spirit of peace should prevail wherever it can, we&#8217;ve always believed, and people of sport believe when you&#8217;re playing, you&#8217;re not fighting.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Why did no-one think of this before? All that is needed for world peace is more sport.
