{"id":4129,"date":"2009-05-10T23:25:42","date_gmt":"2009-05-11T03:25:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/?p=4129"},"modified":"2009-05-10T23:25:42","modified_gmt":"2009-05-11T03:25:42","slug":"imagine-theres-no-anglican-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/imagine-theres-no-anglican-church\/","title":{"rendered":"Imagine there\u2019s no Anglican Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reverse psychology evangelism <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/uk_news\/england\/merseyside\/8040238.stm\" target=\"_blank\">from Liverpool<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The bells of Liverpool&#8217;s Anglican Cathedral are to ring out to John Lennon&#8217;s anti-religious anthem Imagine.<\/p>\n<p>The bells will play the 1971 song, which begins &#8220;Imagine there&#8217;s no Heaven&#8221;, as part of an arts festival on 16 May at 1200, 1230 and 1330 BST.<\/p>\n<p>A cathedral spokesman said: &#8220;Allowing Imagine to be pealed on our bells does not mean we agree with the song lyric.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The song has drawn criticism from some religious figures as Lennon himself has called the anthem &#8220;anti-religious&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool Cathedral said it had carefully considered the &#8220;sensitivities&#8221; surrounding the song&#8217;s lyrical content.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But we recognise its power to make us think. As a cathedral we do not shrink from debate. We recognise the existence of other world views,&#8221; added the cathedral spokesman.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This, of course, opens a whole new technique for evangelism in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century: you make the atheist\u2019s case for them instead of the case for Christ &#8211; to make people think. I wonder why no-none thought of that before.
