{"id":4053,"date":"2009-05-05T13:38:01","date_gmt":"2009-05-05T18:38:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglicansamizdat.wordpress.com\/?p=4053"},"modified":"2009-05-05T13:38:01","modified_gmt":"2009-05-05T18:38:01","slug":"us-military-destroys-afghan-bibles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/us-military-destroys-afghan-bibles\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Military destroys Afghan Bibles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The real solution for Afghanistan \u2013 Christianity &#8211; is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/05\/05\/AR2009050500448.html\" target=\"_blank\">forbidden<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Trying to convert Muslims to another faith is a crime in Afghanistan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bibles in Afghan languages sent to a U.S. soldier at a base in Afghanistan were confiscated and destroyed to ensure that troops did not breach regulations which forbid proselytizing, a military spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. military has denied its soldiers tried to convert Afghans to Christianity, after Qatar-based Al Jazeera television showed soldiers at a bible class on a base with a stack of bibles translated into the local Pashto and Dari languages.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Central Command&#8217;s General Order Number 1 forbids troops on active duty &#8212; including all those based in Iraq and Afghanistan &#8212; from trying to convert people to another religion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So here we are, trying to bring freedom, democracy and a decent life to Afghanistan and the foundation upon which these ideals are based is something that the soldiers are not allowed to talk about!<\/p>\n<p>Surely if we are sufficiently convinced that it\u2019s worth taking our values to a civilisation, then it\u2019s also worth taking the basis for those values?
