{"id":26852,"date":"2019-03-14T15:35:24","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T19:35:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=26852"},"modified":"2019-03-14T18:59:36","modified_gmt":"2019-03-14T22:59:36","slug":"i-agree-with-bishop-kevin-robertson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/i-agree-with-bishop-kevin-robertson\/","title":{"rendered":"I agree with Bishop Kevin Robertson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto&#8217;s Bishop Kevin Robertson is married to another man and, as a result, even though he has been invited to Lambeth 2020, his spouse has not.<\/p>\n<p>Robertson thinks that this decision was <em>\u201cdriven by homophobia\u201d<\/em>. I don\u2019t agree with him about that since the word \u201chomophobia\u201d is a meaningless insult hurled at anyone who believes homosexual practice is inconsistent with a Biblical understanding of marriage and human sexuality.<\/p>\n<p>I do agree with the last thing Robertson said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2019\/15-march\/news\/world\/gay-bishop-accuses-primates-of-homophobia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this article<\/a>, though: <em>\u201dKeeping people away and excluding people is not the answer.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Justin Welby is still trying to present the appearance of straddling the fence on homosexual clergy and same-sex marriage while, in unguarded moments, it is obvious he has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/religion\/10828762\/Archbishop-of-Canterbury-Justin-Welby-says-gay-marriage-is-great.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no disagreement with either<\/a>. Welby privately <em>\u201cattempted to comfort\u201d<\/em> Robertson after breaking the news to him; it\u2019s quite clear where Welby\u2019s sympathies lie.<\/p>\n<p>Is it too much to expect an Archbishop of Canterbury to be honest and straightforward? It seems so.<\/p>\n<p>It is time for Welby to come clean, openly admit he is in favour of same-sex marriage, tell us he is taking the Church of England in that direction, invite <em>all<\/em> bishops and <em>all<\/em> their spouses to Lambeth 2020 and let those who disagree take the action that their consciences dictate.<\/p>\n<p>Read it all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2019\/15-march\/news\/world\/gay-bishop-accuses-primates-of-homophobia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26854\" src=\"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/bp-robertson-med-20190313131247422_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"818\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/bp-robertson-med-20190313131247422_web.jpg 818w, https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/bp-robertson-med-20190313131247422_web-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/bp-robertson-med-20190313131247422_web-768x469.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/bp-robertson-med-20190313131247422_web-491x300.jpg 491w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 818px) 100vw, 818px\" \/>ONE of the bishops who were told that they could not bring their same-sex spouse to next year\u2019s Lambeth Conference has accused conservative Primates of homophobia in their opposition to his presence.<\/p>\n<p>The Area Bishop of York-Scarborough, the Rt Revd Kevin Robertson, a suffragan in the diocese of Toronto, said that he was not convinced that archbishops from the global South who had insisted that his husband, Mohan Sharma, could not attend the Conference were motivated solely by theological conviction.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Robertson was told in person by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth Palace earlier this year that Mr Sharma, unlike the husbands and wives of all other bishops, would not be invited to the Lambeth Conference in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was disappointing, absolutely, and I expressed that to the Archbishop,\u201d Bishop Robertson said. He had been at Lambeth Palace for an induction event for new bishops from across the Ang\u00adlican Communion.<\/p>\n<p>[\u2026..]<\/p>\n<p>He said that in their private conversation at Lambeth Palace, Arch\u00adbishop Welby attempted to comfort him by noting that, at the last Lambeth Conference, gay bishops themselves, let alone their partners, were not invited.<\/p>\n<p>But this did not seem like much progress, Bishop Robertson said. \u201cThis is the great frustration of Lam\u00adbeth \u2014 by excluding spouses like Becki and Mohan it doesn\u2019t allow for frank, even difficult, conversations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they are not present, not seen, not known, how do we advance the conversation and build bridges through the disagreement?
