\u201cAn American gave the sermon\u201d, my wife said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, Michael Curry\u201d, I replied. \u201cYou remember, the fellow in charge of The Episcopal Church \u2013 the church that isn\u2019t allowed to represent Anglicanism anywhere. Except unimportant events like royal weddings.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was all about love\u201d, she said. \u201cBut he did mention Jesus\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhich, TEC\u2019s or the real one?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t be silly\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell\u201d, I said, \u201cYou know that Michael Curry doesn\u2019t believe in marriage, don\u2019t you? At least, not the same Judeo-Christian marriage that has been going strong for 6000 years: he thinks men can \u2018marry\u2019 each other!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s daft\u201d, she replied. \u201cStill, he did talk about love a lot. Don\u2019t they look lovely together?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSo it was a John Lennon sermon? \u2013 you know \u2018All you need is Love\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI suppose so. He was very enthusiastic about their love: he said we will see the end of poverty because of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t expect Harry and Meghan will see much poverty\u201d, I agreed. “Her dress wasn’t cheap, was it?” \u201cHang on a minute, isn\u2019t that George Clooney in the congregation?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes dear, Meghan is a Hollywood actress, of course George is there. Do try to keep up, dear.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t see Elton. Surely they didn\u2019t forget him!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, he\u2019s there with his husband. Or is it his wife\u2026\u2026 it\u2019s hard to keep these things straight\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll leave you to it”, I said, “it\u2019s too much excitement for me first thing in the morning\u201d.<\/p>\n
What better way to sum up my enthusiasm for all this than with a pearl of wisdom from Michael Curry:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe power of love is demonstrated by the fact that we are all here. Two young people fell in love and we all showed up!”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
