The latter technique is preferred by Anglican clergy because it gives the illusion of Deep Thinking while providing an escape route when someone tries to pin them down.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, when the Diocese of Niagara embarked upon the Decade of Evangelism many years ago, it spent nine and a half of those years attempting to define &#8220;evangelism&#8221; and six months producing reports that concluded \u201cevangelism\u201d was just another word for \u201cinclusion\u201d because, obviously, God would not exclude anyone or their behaviour, sexual proclivities or path to salvation no matter how perverse or arcane. Shortly after that most Christians left the diocese.<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/livingchurch.org\/covenant\/2018\/03\/05\/revival-episcopal-evangelism-billy-grahams-legacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Presiding Bishop Michael Curry\u2019s turn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Curry, eager to be on the trailing edge of secular trends has been influenced by the twittering success of Donald Trump. He is tweeting his enthusiasm for evangelism; and making it mean anything \u2013 or nothing \u2013 at all:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25788 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Evangelism.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1768\" height=\"1001\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Evangelism.png 1768w, https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Evangelism-300x170.png 300w, https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Evangelism-768x435.png 768w, https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Evangelism-1024x580.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Evangelism-500x283.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1768px) 100vw, 1768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I suspect the problem is that what motivates Curry et al is not saving souls from the fires of hell but filling emptying buildings and coffers.
