{"id":25159,"date":"2017-07-05T08:39:51","date_gmt":"2017-07-05T12:39:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=25159"},"modified":"2017-07-05T12:12:38","modified_gmt":"2017-07-05T16:12:38","slug":"anglican-cathedral-in-ottawa-has-islamic-prayer-for-canadas-150th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/anglican-cathedral-in-ottawa-has-islamic-prayer-for-canadas-150th\/","title":{"rendered":"Anglican Cathedral in Ottawa has Islamic prayer for Canada\u2019s 150th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On June the 30<sup>th<\/sup>, Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa was host to an interfaith service to celebrate \u2013 using that word very loosely \u2013 Canada\u2019s 150th anniversary of confederation.<\/p>\n<p>To lend legitimacy to the presence of assorted Anglican and Catholic settler bishops and a rabbi, Inuit spiritual leaders and a drum keeper were on hand.<\/p>\n<p>Islamic prayers recited by a local imam punctuated the Anglican cries of self-flagellation over disrupting what passed for Indigenous culture 400 or so years ago.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t get any more Anglican than that.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-25160\" src=\"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ottawa.620-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ottawa.620-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ottawa.620-454x300.jpg 454w, https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ottawa.620.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglicanjournal.com\/articles\/cathedral-hosts-a-prayer-for-canada-150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Algonquin spiritual leader Oshki Nodin (Albert Dumont) gave the opening prayer, asking the Creator to \u201ctouch the Canadians of the future with your sacredness and blessings so that Canada will become a beacon of light and an example to the other countries of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, in his comments to the gathering, acknowledged that Ottawa is built on unceded Algonquin territory. The Algonquin \u201cculture and presence continue to nurture this land,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Watson also thanked \u201call First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis people, their elders, and their ancestors for their valuable past and present contributions to the land and society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Drum keeper and Algonquin Elder Barbara Dumont-Hill led the \u201ccalls to prayer\u201d with a \u201clife-giving\u201d song. \u201cAll our songs were prayers,\u201d she said. \u201cWe sing prayers for everything on the land, and this song talks about the one who gives us life, and walks with us always.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next was Imam Samy Metwally of the Ottawa Mosque who recited a prayer in Islam and translated it into English, ending with, \u201cThere is no deity worthy of worship except God.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On June the 30th, Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa was host to an interfaith service to celebrate \u2013 using that word very loosely \u2013 Canada\u2019s 150th anniversary of confederation.
