{"id":23937,"date":"2016-05-05T22:00:55","date_gmt":"2016-05-06T02:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=23937"},"modified":"2016-05-05T22:00:55","modified_gmt":"2016-05-06T02:00:55","slug":"all-saints-sandy-hill-ottawa-now-a-mosque-on-fridays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/all-saints-sandy-hill-ottawa-now-a-mosque-on-fridays\/","title":{"rendered":"All Saints Sandy Hill Ottawa now a mosque on Fridays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When St. Alban\u2019s voted to join ANiC in 2008, one of the <em>consequences<\/em>, as Justin Welby might call it, was that the Diocese of Ottawa acquired the church building and the congregation had to find a new home.<\/p>\n<p>To fill the empty pews and created the illusion that the diocese had a use for the building, the congregation of All Saints Sandy Hill was <a href=\"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/diocese-of-ottawa\/diocese-of-ottawa\/anglican-potemkin-congregation-alert\/\" target=\"_blank\">imported into St. Alban&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This, of course, had the unfortunate <em>consequence <\/em>of setting All Saints adrift as an Anglican Marie Celeste. I expect the diocese hoped no-one would notice.<\/p>\n<p>Now All Saints is being rented out as <em>\u201cthe kind of space that reflects Canada\u2019s fabric today\u201d. <\/em>That means that on Fridays, it is a mosque.<\/p>\n<p>From\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/local-news\/sandy-hills-all-saints-church-re-made-into-community-hub\" target=\"_blank\">here:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wpmedia.ottawacitizen.com\/2016\/05\/leanne-moussa-president-of-all-saints-development-is-photo.jpeg?quality=55&amp;strip=all&amp;w=840&amp;h=630&amp;crop=1\" width=\"212\" height=\"161\" \/>On the\u00a0December day they took possession of a 115-year-old church in Sandy Hill, Leanne Moussa and some others climbed up a spiral staircase and rang the\u00a0church bells.<\/p>\n<p>Those tolling bells, which at least one person mistook for a call to worship, represented both the joy they felt for saving All Saints church and their\u00a0excitement about its new life as a multi-use community centre. The former Anglican church is now home to several different religious congregations, a small caf\u00e9, artists\u2019 studios, event space for classes and conferences, and there are plans for future redevelopment that could add offices for NGOs and new housing units.<\/p>\n<p>[\u2026.]<\/p>\n<p>The deconsecrated nave will soon serve\u00a0many functions \u2014 mosque on Fridays, synagogue on Saturdays and the spiritual home of two different Christian groups on Sundays.
