Samantha Caravan points out that a lot of <em>\u201cpeople have left the church\u201d<\/em> over this<em>. <\/em>Now, because of the Queer Eucharist, it seems they have returned; all 12 of them.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglicanjournal.com\/articles\/toronto-church-reaches-out-with-queer-eucharist-lgbtq-youth-minister\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.agilitycms.com\/anglican-journal\/Images\/Articles\/2016-articles\/02feb2016\/CaravanSamantha.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"132\" \/>On a January evening in Toronto, a dozen or so congregants filter in from the cold into the surprising mauve, green and yellow interior of a stately old church in a leafy west-end neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p>They stand to sing Marty Haugen\u2019s \u201cHere in this Place New Light is Streaming,\u201d and listen as the Rev. Samantha Caravan, clad in rainbow vestments, asks for inspiration \u201cto speak a new word, to shout another praise.\u201d Caravan reads a passage from St. Peter\u2019s letter, in which he addresses the persecuted early church: \u201cOnce you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sermon is preached on the need for a faith of inclusion, after which the congregation affirms that it will not \u201cpatronize, exclude or ignore the gifts of any person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group stands in a circle around the altar and takes the bread and wine. Together, they offer themselves to be leaders of liberation and proclaimers of divine love. To the much-beloved Thaxted tune, they sing, \u201cLet streams of living justice flow down upon the earth,\u201d before gathering for refreshments and chat.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s queer Eucharist night at St. John\u2019s West Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>It was last fall, says incumbent priest the Rev. Samantha Caravan, when she first suggested having a special Eucharist for LGBTQ people at St. John\u2019s. The church\u2019s historic condemnation of homosexuality, Caravan says, has caused a lot of hurt to non-heterosexuals; a lot of these people have left the church as a result.
