The hymn always reminds me of <em>Philippians 3:8<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It seems we have lost the strength of Paul\u2019s contempt for <em>all the vain things that charm me most,<\/em> because the word, \u03a3\u03ba\u03cd\u03b2\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd (skubala), translated \u201cdung\u201d in the KJV, would be more accurately rendered \u201cshit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The translations are as they are to <a href=\"https:\/\/bible.org\/article\/brief-word-study-skuvbalon\" target=\"_blank\">avoid perturbing<\/a> the delicate sensibilities of Christians.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We sang the wonderful hymn, When I survey the Wondrous Cross this morning \u2013 to the Celtic tune.
