{"id":22212,"date":"2014-11-05T00:40:44","date_gmt":"2014-11-05T04:40:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=22212"},"modified":"2014-11-05T00:41:11","modified_gmt":"2014-11-05T04:41:11","slug":"testing-the-bonds-of-affection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/testing-the-bonds-of-affection\/","title":{"rendered":"Testing the bonds of affection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anglicans are always prattling on about <em>testing the bonds of affection.<\/em> At first glance it gives the impression that, having tired of homosexuality, Anglican clergy have moved on to bondage.<\/p>\n<p>Not so, apparently \u2013 well, it may be so, but no one is talking yet. <em>T<\/em><em>esting the bonds of affection<\/em> refers to the split in the Anglican Communion; as Fred Hiltz <a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.agilitycms.com\/anglican-journal\/NewspaperArchives\/PDFs\/aj-nov2014-web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">notes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We were invited to speak to the subject of \u201ctesting the bonds of affection\u201d and to offer some reflections on the state of relations within and among the churches of the Anglican Communion.<br \/>\nWhile we acknowledged concerns about tensions over any number of matters and our grief over impaired relations between some churches, we noted the blessings of indaba\u2014that manner of speaking and listening.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This clarifies things nicely: obviously, participants in <em>Indabas <\/em>and <em>listening <\/em>would have to be tied down \u2013 presumably with <em>bonds of affection<\/em> &#8211; to prevent them from running out screaming.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglican.ca\/news\/african-primates-meet-bishops-of-the-episcopal-church-in-search-of-transformation-through-friendship\/3003704\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elsewhere<\/a>, Hiltz reveals that a select group of Manchurian Candidate African Primates have been persuaded (perhaps they were threatened with <em>bonds of affection)<\/em> to adopt Western eco-worship and <em>sustainability<\/em>. One can hardly blame them for caving: imagine the torment of <em>sustained <\/em>Indabas.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They framed their conversation in the context of human dignity, the sustainability of ministry and the care for the earth, and discussed a wide range of subjects that provide opportunities for fruitful collaboration and sharing of one another\u2019s gifts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anglicans are always prattling on about testing the bonds of affection.
