{"id":21953,"date":"2014-08-26T10:46:26","date_gmt":"2014-08-26T14:46:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=21953"},"modified":"2014-08-26T18:27:49","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T22:27:49","slug":"city-of-toronto-refuses-permit-for-jesus-parade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/city-of-toronto-refuses-permit-for-jesus-parade\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Toronto refuses permit for Jesus Parade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontosun.com\/2014\/08\/25\/city-wont-bend-for-jesus-parade\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-21954\" src=\"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Jesus-parade.jpg\" alt=\"Jesus parade\" width=\"196\" height=\"133\" \/>It seems, thanks to work around Queen\u2019s Park, the permit for the 15th annual Jesus in the City Parade Sept. 6 has been yanked by the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn view of the circumstances, the Street Events section of Transportation Services cannot approve your request to assemble the parade floats and have parade participants form up along Queen\u2019s Park,\u201d Transportation Services\u2019 Rita Hoy wrote on Friday. \u201cShawn Dartsch from our traffic section indicates that he cannot approve this request as everything hinges on the construction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[\u2026..]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were really upset by this,\u201d said Dr. Charles McVety, of Canada Christian College. \u201cWe have been planning for the whole year and just weeks before the event, notice comes to cancel it. It\u2019s shocking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To add insult to injury, McVety and Jesus in the City organizer Ayanna Solomon question why the city hasn\u2019t helped with an alternative route.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a sad day in this city when a parade for peace and love, Jesus in the City, is cancelled by city officials,\u201d said McVety. \u201cThey would never do this to (the Caribbean Carnival) or the Pride Parade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[\u2026..]<\/p>\n<p>Director of Transportation Services Jacqueline White said, \u201cUnfortunately it was not possible, logistically, to accommodate the sheer number of people that were expected to participate, on the date requested, on Queen\u2019s Park Crescent,\u201d which is being \u201cresurfaced, and there would be ongoing lane closures and construction equipment present.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe weekend requested also conflicts with orientation activities at the University of Toronto and it is the opening weekend of the Toronto Film Festival, which often has activities on Bloor St.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I am quite certain that there is no construction known to man that would have prevented the City of Toronto issuing the necessary permits for the Pride Parade a few months back.<\/p>\n<p>No doubt the Anglican Church of Canada will sternly denounce this decision by the city; now I come to think of it, the ACoC, ever mindful of its priorities, only participates in the Pride Parade, not the Jesus Parade.
