The idea is that the loan is repaid on payday: it is a <i>payday<\/i> <i>loan<\/i> company.<\/p>\n<p>Justin Welby wants to <i>\u201ccompete Wonga out of business\u201d <\/i>by creating church assisted credit unions. The problem is, it will take <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2013\/jul\/25\/church-england-wonga\" target=\"_blank\">ten years to accomplish<\/a>; meanwhile Wonga is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2410676\/Wonga-profits-hit-1-2million-week-number-payday-loans-soars-70-year.html\" target=\"_blank\">approving 10,400 loans a day<\/a> and makes \u00a31.2million a week in profit <i>now.<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>After lending more than a \u00a31billion in a year for the first time, it now plans to expand by encouraging customers to buy luxuries they would otherwise struggle to afford.<\/p>\n<p>Its \u2018Pay Later\u2019 deal allows borrowers to buy \u2018higher value goods\u2019, such as furniture or a dishwasher, for up to \u00a31,000, with an up-front charge of 7 per cent of the price.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The idea of buying luxuries we \u201c<i>would otherwise struggle to afford\u201d <\/i>was not a problem that afflicted my family as I was growing up. Post-war rationing made \u00bd a pound of butter a luxury, afford it or not; my parent\u2019s lives were not so devoid of meaning that they felt the need to fill the emptiness with <i>\u201cluxuries they would otherwise struggle to afford.\u201d <\/i>Not so for many people today, I fear.<\/p>\n<p>In trying to set up competing credit unions, the Church of England is foolishly engaged in trying to beat the world at its own game: for some reason, it <i>will<\/i> keep doing this \u2013 possibly because it has forgotten what its own game is &#8211; and it always fails.<\/p>\n<p>If Justin Welby really wants to compete with Wonga, preach the Gospel \u2013 the real Gospel \u2013 and give people meaning and purpose in their lives so that they don\u2019t have to yield to the impulse of attempting to fill their vacuous existence with luxuries that they don\u2019t need, can\u2019t afford and won\u2019t satisfy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wonga makes short term loans to people at exorbitant rates.
