{"id":19517,"date":"2013-06-04T20:45:21","date_gmt":"2013-06-05T00:45:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=19517"},"modified":"2013-06-04T20:45:21","modified_gmt":"2013-06-05T00:45:21","slug":"the-editorial-independence-of-the-anglican-journal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/the-editorial-independence-of-the-anglican-journal\/","title":{"rendered":"The editorial independence of the Anglican Journal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the principal secretary to Fred Hiltz, Paul Feheley, was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglicanjournal.com\/articles\/principal-secretary-to-edit-anglican-journal-11359\" target=\"_blank\">appointed editor<\/a> of the Anglican Journal, some questioned whether this would compromise the paper\u2019s editorial independence.<\/p>\n<p>The Journal gets a $596,627 subsidy from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pch.gc.ca\/eng\/1283974447909\/1273584006407\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Heritage<\/a> \u2013 from our taxes \u2013 but only if it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglicanjournal.com\/nc\/other\/news-items\/archive\/2011\/04\/pa\/1\/article\/cogs-approves-motion-to-un-incorporate-anglican-journal-9676\/abp\/167.html\" target=\"_blank\">maintains editorial independence<\/a>; since it involves money, this is an important issue for the church.<\/p>\n<p>Doubts I may have harboured about the Journal\u2019s editorial independence were allayed somewhat when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglicanjournal.com\/articles\/bishop-sues-blogger-for-defamation\" target=\"_blank\">the article<\/a> about my little spat with Michael Bird appeared.<\/p>\n<p>However, the doubts \u2013 which I am doing my best to <i>embrace<\/i> &#8211; were reinvigorated when, the day after the article appeared, five paragraphs mysteriously vanished; <a href=\"http:\/\/episcopaldigitalnetwork.com\/ens\/\">ENS<\/a> also carried the article and the same thing happened there.<\/p>\n<p>Presumably, somebody contacted the Journal and ENS to ask for the removal of the now expunged material.
