THE BISHOP of the Dio\u00adcese of Ni\u00ada\u00adgara in the Angli\u00adcan Church of Canada has filed a law\u00adsuit against con\u00adser\u00adva\u00adtive blog\u00adger claim\u00ading \u201cdefama\u00adtion of char\u00adac\u00adter\u201d.<\/p>\n
On 19 Fe\u00adbru\u00adary David Jenk\u00adins, au\u00adthor of the Angli\u00adcan Samiz\u00addat blog re\u00adceived no\u00adtice that Bishop Bird had asked a court to shut down his blog, ban him from mak\u00ading fur\u00adther com\u00adments about him and to pay him $400,000 in dam\u00adages.<\/p>\n
Mr Jenk\u00adins stated that he had been sur\u00adprised by the law\u00adsuit. \u201cCon\u00adtrary to what one might ex\u00adpect in such cir\u00adcum\u00adstances, I did not re\u00adceive a cease and de\u00adsist let\u00adter in ad\u00advance of the suit.\u201d<\/p>\n
The State\u00adment of Claim filed with the On\u00adtario Su\u00adpe\u00adrior Court Jus\u00adtice al\u00adleged Mr Jenk\u00adins ma\u00adli\u00adciously and falsely stated Bishop Bird was a \u201cweak and in\u00adef\u00adfec\u00adtual leader and that his ac\u00adtions were mo\u00adti\u00advated by avarice or fi\u00adnan\u00adcial gain\u201d. He also claimed that the bishop was a \u201cthief\u201d and had a \u201csex\u00adual fetish\u201d, and that he was an \u201cathe\u00adist and heretic bent upon the de\u00adstruc\u00adtion of Chris\u00adtian\u00adity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 31 posts cited in the com\u00adplaint were sub\u00adse\u00adquently re\u00admoved from his web\u00adsite. At the bishop\u2019s re\u00adquest other posts were also tak\u00ading down, Mr Jenk\u00adins noted, \u201cas a ges\u00adture of good faith.\u201d<\/p>\n
