{"id":19339,"date":"2013-05-07T13:45:11","date_gmt":"2013-05-07T17:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=19339"},"modified":"2013-05-07T13:45:11","modified_gmt":"2013-05-07T17:45:11","slug":"polygamous-plastic-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/polygamous-plastic-marriage\/","title":{"rendered":"Polygamous plastic marriage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With impeccable logic, Slate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/double_x\/doublex\/2013\/04\/legalize_polygamy_marriage_equality_for_all.html\" target=\"_blank\">points out<\/a> that, if marriage is good for same-sex couples, it should be good for a polygamous m\u00e9nage, too.<\/p>\n<p>As the Slate article notes, when it comes to redefining marriage, <i>we\u2019re not done yet<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>I feel slightly sorry for both TEC and the ACoC: they struggle mightily to keep up with the foibles and fashions of the culture in which they are so pleased to be immersed, yet they are still fumbling with the, by now, pass\u00e9 blessing of same sex couples. Where is the <i>generous pastoral response<\/i> for polygamists, where are the polyamorous clergy proudly coming out to be consecrated as bishops in bullet proof vests, where are the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovefreeordiemovie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Big Love or Die<\/a> movies? Very disappointing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Yes, really. While the Supreme Court and the rest of us are all focused on the human right of marriage equality, let\u2019s not forget that the fight doesn\u2019t end with same-sex marriage. We need to legalize polygamy, too. Legalized polygamy in the United States is the constitutional, feminist, and sex-positive choice. More importantly, it would actually help protect, empower, and strengthen women, children, and families.<\/p>\n<p>[\u2026..]<\/p>\n<p>The definition of marriage is plastic. Just like heterosexual marriage is no better or worse than homosexual marriage, marriage between two consenting adults is not inherently more or less \u201ccorrect\u201d than marriage among three (or four, or six) consenting adults. Though polygamists are a minority\u2014a tiny minority, in fact\u2014freedom has no value unless it extends to even the smallest and most marginalized groups among us. So let\u2019s fight for marriage equality until it extends to every same-sex couple in the United States\u2014and then let\u2019s keep fighting.
