{"id":18335,"date":"2012-12-22T14:15:30","date_gmt":"2012-12-22T19:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=18335"},"modified":"2012-12-22T14:15:30","modified_gmt":"2012-12-22T19:15:30","slug":"richard-dawkins-reckons-being-raised-catholic-is-child-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/richard-dawkins-reckons-being-raised-catholic-is-child-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Richard Dawkins reckons being raised Catholic is child abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Richard Dawkins made the point during an interview on Al Jazeera, a broadcaster owned by Qatar whose state religion is Wahhabism, the religion that places its children in madrassas to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/shows\/saudi\/analyses\/madrassas.html\" target=\"_blank\">replenish the ranks of the Taliban<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dawkins, a self-styled man of <i>reason,<\/i> ignores this and concentrates instead on Christianity \u2013 in its Catholic expression \u2013 a religion whose founder became a child in order to redeem mankind and, when children came to him, said: <i>&#8220;Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these&#8221;<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>His reasoning is based on the contention that Catholicism teaches something that it doesn\u2019t actually teach: that the eternal destination of protestants, including children, is hell. Based on an anecdote from one person, he reaches the conclusion that paedophilia is merely \u201cyucky\u201d \u2013 a free expression of the Selfish Gene &#8211; and Catholicism is a malignant spawn from the eighth circle of, where else \u2013 hell.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2251963\/Being-raised-Catholic-worse-child-abuse-Latest-incendiary-claim-atheist-professor-Richard-Dawkins.html?ito=feeds-newsxml\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The remarks are due to be broadcast tonight by Qatar-based TV network Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>Interviewer Mehdi Hasan asked Professor Dawkins about previous comments he made, when he said: \u2018Horrible as sexual abuse no doubt was, the damage was arguably less than the long-term psychological damage inflicted by bringing the child up Catholic in the first place.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hasan asked: \u2018You believe that being bought up as a Catholic is worse than being abused by a priest?\u2019. Professor Dawkins replied: \u2018There are shades of being abused by a priest, and I quoted an example of a woman in America who wrote to me saying that when she was seven years old she was sexually abused by a priest in his car.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018At the same time a friend of hers, also seven, who was of a Protestant family, died, and she was told that because her friend was Protestant she had gone to Hell and will be roasting in Hell forever.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018She told me of those two abuses,\u00a0 she got over the physical abuse; it was yucky but she got over it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018But the mental abuse of being told about Hell, she took years to get over.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Richard Dawkins made the point during an interview on Al Jazeera, a broadcaster owned by Qatar whose state religion is Wahhabism, the religion that places its children in madrassas to replenish the ranks of the Taliban.
