{"id":17819,"date":"2012-11-03T00:37:59","date_gmt":"2012-11-03T04:37:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=17819"},"modified":"2012-11-03T00:37:59","modified_gmt":"2012-11-03T04:37:59","slug":"diocese-of-ruperts-land-approves-same-sex-blessings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/diocese-of-ruperts-land-approves-same-sex-blessings\/","title":{"rendered":"Diocese of Rupert\u2019s Land approves same-sex blessings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglicanjournal.com\/nc\/other\/news-items\/article\/same-sex-blessings-available-in-ruperts-land-11301.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The blessing of civil marriages between same-gender couples can now take place in diocese of Rupert\u2019s Land parishes that wish to offer them.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately a third of the Anglican Church of Canada\u2019s 30 dioceses now have moved forward with same-sex blessings, an issue that has deeply divided Anglicans in Canada and worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The 2010 meeting of General Synod, the church\u2019s governing body, did not approve the so-called local option allowing dioceses to grant same-sex blessings. But it recognized that the local option has been exercised by some dioceses and may be used in the future without the approval of the national church.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The reason the \u201clocal option\u201d \u2013 allowing dioceses to make their own decision on whether to permit same-sex blessings \u2013 was not approved at the 2010 general synod is because it would have earned the Anglican Church of Canada a slap on the wrist from Canterbury \u2013 albeit a mild one.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid this, the local option was not sanctioned \u2013 in the full knowledge that dioceses would make up their own minds anyway. It was an act of cowardice, a passing of the buck, an exploration of a <em>deeper<\/em> hypocrisy.<\/p>\n<p>As the malaise spreads, it seems pretty clear \u2013 to me at least \u2013 that the fragile, forlorn hope nursed by na\u00efve conservatives that the Anglican Church of Canada might eventually repent has degenerated into wilful self-deception.
