{"id":17150,"date":"2012-08-10T16:35:31","date_gmt":"2012-08-10T20:35:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=17150"},"modified":"2012-08-10T16:35:31","modified_gmt":"2012-08-10T20:35:31","slug":"ontario-government-is-keeping-abortion-statistics-secret","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/ontario-government-is-keeping-abortion-statistics-secret\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario government is keeping abortion statistics secret"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/fullcomment.nationalpost.com\/2012\/08\/10\/kelly-mcparland-ontario-judges-abortion-statistics-too-hot-for-public-to-handle\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Judging by the explanation for its decision to restrict public access to abortion figures, Ontario\u2019s government should now be preparing a lengthy list of other statistics that are too dangerous to be shared with the public.<\/p>\n<p>Questioned as to why it had begun making it harder to obtain figures related to the number of abortions performed in the province, a practice that has been increasingly evident to researchers for some time, the provincial Ministry of Health responded in a statement to the <em>National Post<\/em>: \u201cRecords relating to abortion services are highly sensitive and that is why a decision was made to exempt these records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exemption referred to is an amendment last year to Ontario\u2019s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). The act is intended to \u201cincrease the financial accountability of organizations in the broader public sector,\u201d in part by making statistics publicly available. Abortion figures are excluded from the act.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Well, because they\u2019re \u201csensitive.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If abortion is merely the expulsion of a group of cells from a woman\u2019s womb, there is really no reason to conceal the number of expulsions.<\/p>\n<p>If abortion is the terminating of a person\u2019s life, then there should be a law against it.<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario government can\u2019t have it both ways: either publish the figures or have an honest parliamentary debate on limiting abortion \u2013 I would like it gone, but let\u2019s start with \u201climiting\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From here: Judging by the explanation for its decision to restrict public access to abortion figures, Ontario\u2019s government should now be preparing a lengthy list of other statistics that are too dangerous to be shared with the public.
