{"id":16400,"date":"2012-05-04T09:00:46","date_gmt":"2012-05-04T13:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=16400"},"modified":"2012-05-04T09:00:46","modified_gmt":"2012-05-04T13:00:46","slug":"same-sex-marriage-showdown-at-all-saints-sanderstead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/same-sex-marriage-showdown-at-all-saints-sanderstead\/","title":{"rendered":"Same-sex marriage showdown at All Saints, Sanderstead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Read it all <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/religion\/9243141\/Anglican-preacher-barred-from-pulpit-over-opposition-to-gay-marriage.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Peter Gowlland, 78, was accused of sowing discord among worshippers at the liberal-leaning All Saints Church in Sanderstead, Surrey, by inviting them to sign a petition against the Government plans to introduce same-sex weddings.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being told by his Archdeacon to \u201cwithdraw\u201d from ministry for two months as a result, Church authorities continued to insist last night that he had \u201cnot been suspended\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The retired science teacher says he was told \u201cwe don\u2019t do that here\u201d by a fellow lay reader when he set out a pile of leaflets promoting the former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey\u2019s Coalition For Marriage before a Sunday service last month.<\/p>\n<p>Matters came to a head shortly during the service when he urged parishioners in his sermon to be \u201cbold like the apostles\u201d and register their opposition to the redefinition of marriage.<\/p>\n<p>It prompted what might pass in the Church of England for a public showdown: a brief and polite disagreement with two other lay readers in front of the congregation, a retired bishop and the visiting Worldwide President of the Mothers\u2019 Union.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It goes to show that there <em>are<\/em> ways to have fun in a liberal Church of England parish.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanderstead-parish.org.uk\/?page_id=8\" target=\"_blank\">All Saints<\/a> proudly proclaims:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Whoever you are, and wherever you find yourself on your journey of faith, there is a place for you at All Saints\u2019.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But if, <em>on your journey of faith<\/em>, you find yourself at a spot where you disagree with same-sex marriage, keep it to yourself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Read it all here: Peter Gowlland, 78, was accused of sowing discord among worshippers at the liberal-leaning All Saints Church in Sanderstead, Surrey, by inviting them to sign a petition against the Government plans to introduce same-sex weddings.
