{"id":16261,"date":"2012-04-19T22:39:34","date_gmt":"2012-04-20T02:39:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=16261"},"modified":"2012-04-19T22:39:34","modified_gmt":"2012-04-20T02:39:34","slug":"diocese-of-niagara-has-no-use-for-the-buildings-it-is-seizing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/diocese-of-niagara-has-no-use-for-the-buildings-it-is-seizing\/","title":{"rendered":"Diocese of Niagara has no use for the buildings it is seizing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cAn agreement in principle\u201d has been reached between the Diocese of Niagara and the three parishes that left the diocese in 2008. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niagaraadvance.ca\/2012\/04\/19\/two-church-parishes-one-church-roof\" target=\"_blank\">This article<\/a> (my emphasis) chronicles the experiences of the Church of one of them, the Good Shepherd in St. Catharines.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Anglican Diocese of Niagara Archdeacon Michael Patterson said the situation has been difficult for all sides and he is looking forward to its conclusion. An agreement in principle has been reached between the two parties, and all that\u2019s required are signatures.<\/p>\n<p>The diocese has not determined what it will do with the church building on Granthoam, Former members of the Good Shepherd parish who disagreed with the split have moved to other congregations in the city, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have been patient and waiting upon outcomes to determine what would happen, generations of people who were members of that community, (who) hope upon hope that we\u2019ll be able to re-ignite the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>But Patterson said that given the climate of church closures, amalgamations and declining attendance, the diocese cannot commit to re-opening the church.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Archdeacon Michael Patterson admits that the diocese has no real use for the building in St. Catharines; the same would go for St. Hilda\u2019s since there is no congregation eagerly awaiting the return of the diocese there either.<\/p>\n<p>This is at odds with a letter sent to the congregation of St. Hilda\u2019s by Bishops Michael Bird and Ralph Spence in 2008 where they declared their determination to keep the church doors open come what may:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/19-04-2012-10-28-48-PM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-16262\" title=\"19-04-2012 10-28-48 PM\" src=\"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/19-04-2012-10-28-48-PM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"90\" \/><\/a>The doors probably will remain open \u2013 for the real estate agents and their prospective buyers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cAn agreement in principle\u201d has been reached between the Diocese of Niagara and the three parishes that left the diocese in 2008.
