I wouldn\u2019t normally want to advertise a book like this, but it is clear that Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi is a moderate Muslim, since he advises husbands to \u201crefrain from beating [their wives] excessively<\/em>\u201d and only with a “hand or stick” rather than a metal pipe. And only following a little ear yanking foreplay.<\/p>\n

TORONTO – A local bookstore has \u201csold out\u201d of a controversial marriage guide that advises Muslim men on how to beat their wives.<\/p>\n

The 160-page book, published by Idara Impex in New Delhi, India, is written by Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi, who\u2019s described in the book\u2019s foreword as a \u201cprolific writer on almost every topic of Islamic learning.\u201d<\/p>\n

The store\u2019s manager, who didn\u2019t give his name, said the book had been sold out for some time, and the store\u2019s owner, whom the manager identified as Shamim Ahmad, refused to comment for the story.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t clear whether the shop has ordered more copies of the book, but it\u2019s available at online Islamic bookstores and even through eBay.<\/p>\n

In the book\u2019s opening pages, it is written that \u201cit might be necessary to restrain her with strength or even to threaten her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, its author advises that \u201cthe husband should treat the wife with kindness and love, even if she tends to be stupid and slow sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Page 45 contains the rights of the husband, which include his wife\u2019s inability to leave \u201chis house without his permission,\u201d and that his wife must \u201cfulfil his desires\u201d and \u201cnot allow herself to be untidy … but should beautify herself for him … \u201d<\/p>\n

In terms of physical punishment, the book advises that a husband may scold her, \u201cbeat by hand or stick,\u201d withhold money from her or \u201cpull (her) by the ears,\u201d but should \u201crefrain from beating her excessively.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
