All\u00a0identifiable givers to the church receive the newspaper along with their diocesan publication.\u00a0Circulation skyrockets to more than 200,000.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Since I still receive the Journal, I must be viewed as an \u201cidentifiable giver\u201d: believe it or not, I don\u2019t actually give the Anglican Church of Canada any money, so my <em>identifiable giving<\/em> must be all \u00a0the free publicity the ACoC receives on this blog. It\u2019s gratifying to be appreciated.<\/p>\n<p>Come to think of it, though, the Journal receives a yearly subsidy of $596,627 from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pch.gc.ca\/eng\/1283974447909\/1273584006407\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Heritage<\/a>, so, as a taxpayer, I am still contributing to the Anglican Church of Canada.<strong> <\/strong>Very reluctantly.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>1968-1975<\/strong><br \/>\nHugh McCullum, a well-respected journalist and activist, is the first editor to hire professional\u00a0reporters rather than clergy to produce stories on poverty, aboriginal land claims, pollution,\u00a0abortion law reform and apartheid. A fierce advocate of editorial independence, he believes that\u00a0an open, transparent church is a stronger church.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And now, 40 years later, the ACoC is such an \u201copen, transparent\u201d church that its membership has strengthened from around 1.36 million to 320,000, many of whom are septuagenarians.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>1977<\/strong><br \/>\nThe newspaper\u2019s editorial policy is revised. While the Canadian Churchman remains the\u00a0national newspaper of the Anglican Church of Canada, its\u2019 <em>[sic] <\/em>position as an independent voice\u00a0rather than the official voice of the church, is made clear.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The supposed editorial independence of the Journal is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglicanessentials.ca\/wordpress\/index.php\/2011\/04\/02\/the-anglican-journal-and-heritage-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\">frequently reiterated<\/a>, largely to avoid losing its substantial grant from Heritage Canada. In reality, it has about the same amount of independence as Pravda had from the U.S.S.R.<\/p>\n<p>Even with the yearly grant, the Journal has been shrinking \u2013 it must be getting <em>stronger<\/em> \u2013 and has had to appeal to members for money:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>1994<\/strong><br \/>\nWith funding from General Synod slashed by 38 per cent, the Journal seeks donations from\u00a0readers for the first time. Proceeds from the Anglican Journal Appeal are shared 50\/50 with the\u00a0diocesan newspapers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rest assured, though, that it has not abandoned its liberal blinkers: instead it now oozes <em>reader friendliness:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>2010<\/strong><br \/>\nA re-design of the Anglican Journal, the first in a decade, is launched with the April issue,\u00a0offering a bold new reader-friendly look.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can be found here.
