{"id":13681,"date":"2011-07-22T18:35:59","date_gmt":"2011-07-22T22:35:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=13681"},"modified":"2011-07-22T18:35:59","modified_gmt":"2011-07-22T22:35:59","slug":"the-american-civil-liberties-union-still-working-hard-to-curtail-liberty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/the-american-civil-liberties-union-still-working-hard-to-curtail-liberty\/","title":{"rendered":"The American Civil Liberties Union, still working hard to curtail liberty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/vermont-inn-sued-by-aclu-after-refusing-lesbian-wedding-reception?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+LifesitenewscomLatestHeadlines+%28LifeSiteNews.com+Latest+Headlines%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced Tuesday that they are suing a Vermont inn on behalf of a lesbian couple, after the inn\u2019s Christian owners refused to host the couple\u2019s \u2018wedding\u2019 reception.<\/p>\n<p>The Wildflower Inn in Lyndonville, owned by Jim and Mary O\u2019Reilly, has a policy against hosting receptions for homosexual \u2018weddings\u2019, so when Kate Baker and Ming Linsley of New York City approached them last fall, they were turned away.<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU alleges that the O\u2019Reillys\u2019 policy violates Vermont\u2019s Fair Housing and Public Accommodations Act, which prohibits the denial of goods and services based on customers\u2019 sexual orientation.\u00a0 The act contains exceptions for religious organizations and small inns with five or fewer rooms, but not larger establishments.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the O\u2019Reillys, who are devout Catholics, have stood their ground.\u00a0 \u201cWe do not \u2026 feel that we can offer our personal services wholeheartedly to celebrate the marriage between same sex couples because it goes against everything that we as Catholics believe in,\u201d they wrote in a statement Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have never refused rooms or dining or employment to gays or lesbians,\u201d they continued.\u00a0 \u201cMany of our guests have been same sex couples. We welcome and treat all people with respect and dignity.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The ACLU ought to be renamed the ACSLU \u2013 the \u201cS\u201d, standing for &#8220;selective&#8221;. The liberties of Jim and Mary O\u2019Reilly should be no less important than those of the lesbian couple: and the\u00a0O\u2019Reilly&#8217;s liberties are far more threatened.
