{"id":12233,"date":"2011-03-16T11:52:13","date_gmt":"2011-03-16T16:52:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=12233"},"modified":"2011-03-16T11:52:13","modified_gmt":"2011-03-16T16:52:13","slug":"internet-explorer-9-not-much-use-for-photographers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/internet-explorer-9-not-much-use-for-photographers\/","title":{"rendered":"Internet Explorer 9 not much use for photographers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wanted to like IE9, I really did: it is very fast and has a number of useful built-in security features.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, it is next to useless if you are a photographer and want to see images on a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gamut\" target=\"_blank\">wide-gamut<\/a> monitor \u2013 something photographers usually have \u2013 with anything like accurate colours.<\/p>\n<p>All wide-gamut monitors come with colour profiles that Windows can use to correctly display colour information. Unfortunately Microsoft has never used these profiles in any of its version of Internet Explorer; instead it uses a default sRGB profile \u2013 IE9 is no exception. This results in every image appearing super-saturated on a wide-gamut monitor. Ironically, Microsoft <a href=\"http:\/\/ie.microsoft.com\/testdrive\/Graphics\/ColorProfiles\/Default.html\">trumpets<\/a> IE9\u2019s ability to correctly extract\u00a0 embedded colour profiles from images \u2013 but it then proceeds to nullify its efforts by displaying the image using an sRGB profile, regardless of the monitor.<\/p>\n<p>Firefox has used monitor colour profiles for some time, so it\u2019s back to Firefox for me.<\/p>\n<p>For example. This is what Ava should look like:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/MG_7310.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12236\" title=\"_MG_7310\" src=\"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/MG_7310.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"787\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And this is how IE9 displays her on a wide gamut monitor:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Ava11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12239\" title=\"Ava1\" src=\"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Ava11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"788\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Update: <\/em>I just installed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/en-US\/firefox\/RC\/\" target=\"_blank\">Firefox 4.0 RC1<\/a> and it seems to be as fast &#8211; or almost as fast &#8211; as IE9. And the colours are right.
