Church of England baptism services may be re-written to remove some references to Christianity.<\/p>\n

The plan for a new \u2018baptism lite\u2019 service designed to make christenings more interesting to non-churchgoers will be considered next month by the Church\u2019s parliament, the General Synod.<\/p>\n

Supporters say the baptism service should be \u2018expressed in culturally appropriate and accessible language\u2019 that is readily understood by \u2018non-theologically versed Britons\u2019.
\nBut traditionalist clergy said the idea amounted to \u2018dumbing down\u2019.<\/p>\n

The new service would be used at 150,000 christenings each year. If the plan is accepted, it will be the third full re-write of the baptism ceremony in around 30 years \u2013 the version in the Church\u2019s Book of Common Prayer went virtually unaltered for more than 400 years until 1980.<\/p>\n

Complaints centre on three sections of the baptism service from the Church\u2019s latest prayer book, Common Worship, authorised for use in 1997.<\/p>\n

In one, parents, godparents or an adult being baptised are asked to \u2018reject the devil and all rebellion against God\u2019 and to renounce \u2018the deceit and corruption of evil\u2019. They are asked to \u2018submit to Christ as Lord\u2019.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
