{"id":11068,"date":"2010-12-22T18:12:16","date_gmt":"2010-12-22T23:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/?p=11068"},"modified":"2010-12-22T18:12:16","modified_gmt":"2010-12-22T23:12:16","slug":"homosexuality-is-no-longer-a-disorder-in-alberta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anglicansamizdat.net\/wordpress\/homosexuality-is-no-longer-a-disorder-in-alberta\/","title":{"rendered":"Homosexuality is no longer a disorder in Alberta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/canada\/edmonton\/story\/2010\/12\/22\/edmonton-homosexuality-mental-disorder.html?ref=rss\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Alberta has removed homosexuality from its diagnostic guide to mental-health disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Alberta Health and Wellness Minister Gene Zwozdesky ordered the section of the document removed Tuesday after a reporter brought the issue to the province&#8217;s attention.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I ordered the immediate removal of something I thought was incorrect, unacceptable, rather ancient in its thinking and otherwise demeaning,&#8221; he said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve also asked for a thorough review of the entire classification categories.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The diagnostic guide helps doctors decide what to bill for the treatment of patients.<\/p>\n<p>Homosexuality was listed in the guide under sexual deviations and disorders.<\/p>\n<p>The American Psychiatric Association stopped considering homosexuality a disorder in 1973, followed by the Canadian Psychiatric Association in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>Zwozdesky said he doesn&#8217;t know why it remained so long on Alberta&#8217;s list.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The reasons given for the change are instructive:<\/p>\n<p><em>something I thought was incorrect <\/em>is hardly a scientific conclusion based on evidence.<\/p>\n<p><em>unacceptable<\/em> is a merely an expression of contemporary mores in much the same vein as frowning on farting at the dinner table.<\/p>\n<p><em>ancient in its thinking <\/em>is completely inaccurate considering the thinking in question must have been in vogue in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p><em>otherwise demeaning <\/em>is even less scientifically convincing than the first reason.<\/p>\n<p>It just goes to show that psychiatry owes more to political correctness than it does to empirically verifiable fact.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From here: Alberta has removed homosexuality from its diagnostic guide to mental-health disorders.
